PC OR MAC ?

he, he, yeah I bet! I have Win 7 x64 on my desktop for software testing... but then I am in the security software field and because it is so restrictive it is considered "safer". So many of the problems that a 64bit kernel introduces is considered a good thing. Although I bet it can make development a royal PITA. (Of course, programming in .NET, mixing with C++ code and libraries is no picnic in a 32bit system either!)

I think you've not added much petrol to flaming the Mac v.s. PC war.. Mac has similar issues if you run the Kernel in 64bit mode. Some drivers just won't work, etc...
Although I have not got into Mac kernel programming, so I'm not real sure how much better or worse Mac is that regard overall.

Actually, in the end I wish there was a way I could add honest commentary on why I like one over the other.
There are a lot of issues between the two OSes that users should be aware of. Sadly, the zealots will bash and flame people for making any criticism regardless of how true it might be and the worthwhile comments get drowned in fanatic rants.

I will have to look up the page I found years ago on how to prepare to move from Windows to a Mac. It was pretty honest about both the bonuses and pitfalls of converting... if I can find it I'll post or PM the OP.

a tandy trs mc 10
an atari st 1080
a hitachi pentium 3 laptop with windoze me
an Emac.
an Imac.
two mackbooks.


only one brand incited me to be a repeat customer. (apple)
only four machines started every single time from the day I bought them without fail.... the emac, the mackbooks and the trs80 mc 10. (the imac, apple replaced the logic board out of warranty, no charge)
only one machine broke down and malfunctioned so often it angered me enough to put my fist through it.... the hitachi laptop with windoze me.

So infer what you will from that
flash, java, and anything microsoft does not go on my macs.

So what we need now is a definitive answer, and here it is on YouTube

Well that certainly goes a long ways towards explaining the types of people that like windows pee cees.....
Anybody care to psycho-analyze that guy?

Soooooooo..... I have no interest in spending my time solving computer software/hardware problems.

If wanted to spend my time trying to solve the kinds of problems that computer/os caused....... I suppose I could switch back...

I'm certainly not trying to escalate any arguments just correct some
statements about Macs being 100% reliable compared to PC's. I use
PC's but there's a lot I don't like about them particularly the
keyboards and lately SATA connectors.

Both machines use the same components so I would expect reliability
to be about the same.

The good thing about PC's is that you probably have a spare board
that can be used to fix the problem straight away. Even old boards
usually work OK.

I have currently a Unibody Macbook that's just over two years old and it's been the best overall package of a computer I have ever owned. I like the OS, the fact that everything is intuitive and the build quality is very good. Was expensive though, but it's lasting a lot better than any previous laptop or PC I have owned. I haven't had to reinstall or really do anything to it.

I also have an Acer Laptop which has WIndows 7 on it and it is a massive improvement over XP and Vista (I had to reinstall this about 6 times in a month as it just killed itself repeatedly, even sent it back and it was actually returned running worse!!!!) though I will admit it does take a little getting used to as the interface is pretty different now!Though the other week I got the first "Blue Screen of Death".....

My old big box is currently running Linux as XP finally died and I was getting odd error messages. Ubuntu Linux is decent and free and it lets me see my pics on a large screen and makes me feel bad as most of them are pretty rubbish.......

So, personally I can use any system but I have had more problems with PC's than with my Mac. Like Techno-Terminator I have limited patience with messing around with the innards of these things I have spent a small fortune on and that I expect to work seeing as so many very clever people are involved in the design of them. I'm simply not interested in computer innards, I just wnat them to turn on and do what I want them to with the minimum of fuss, I don't want to even really notice my computer!!

Oh, well...... Ummmm....... I would go Mac in the end still, been delighted with my Macbook and hope to get quite some considerable use out of it yet!

I'm in the 'lucky' position of having a PC Lappy - a Fujitsu Siemens one - it was my husband's and it stays here because daughter # 1 has to be able to access her works machine when she visits , that's how she heard from her Boss that he and his Goldwing had been forcibly physically separated [ and both said OUCH !! ] and she had to go down South the next day ] She can't get access through my MacBook Pro - we have checked

Now this PC lappy is, to put it mildly, elderly , well past its sell by date but I have to keep it , and it's dud battery , and keyboard that's gone creaky [ actually an external keyboard is now attached ] . It is fully patched - a really good PC owning friend does keep it up to date for me using Logmein - all I do is boot it up for him - thereafter he updates and then shuts it down . Eventually I'm going to have to replace it

I don't know why there is always problems with File Managers seemingly
on all systems. Under DOS we had Xtree Gold v3 which was absolutely
brilliant. Several attempts were made by Xtree, Norton etc. to port
it over to Windows, but they never worked. With Xtree if you wanted
to see all the files in a branch you just pressed 'B' and it showed
them all. Want a document that has Pentax in it CTR S searched all the
branch and tagged the ones containing Pentax, Press V to view them
under Windows there's nothing remotely similar. I could never see any point in having a database you could just put everything in text files.

I don't use it nowdays, but I still have an AST Ascentia laptop from
1995 that has never given me any trouble in years of use. It has an
early Pentium and Windows 95 on it. Quite a clever machine even by
todays standards. Takes up to two slide out batteries for 6 hours
use. The batteries have 5 LEDS on them to show the power.
The HD, CD and floppy all slide out. I can't bring myself round to throwing it away

I also have a 3 year old Toshiba laptop that has never given me any
problems plus 3 desktops and the only problems with them have been
one Soundblaster Audigy 4 card died and a Soltek motherboard had to
have new caps. Some file problems with XP Pro on one m/c.

Not quite the whole story... and definitely not as simple as "Apple are bad because they use rubbish capacitors"

AFAIK, A large (and reputable) electrolytic capacitor company bought chemicals from a Chinese supplier. Turned out the supplier had stolen the formula from the very same capacitor company - but hadn't stolen the whole formula! So, capacitors all over the place were (and still are) failing

The capacitors that were 'hit' are typically used in switch mode power supplies. Being in the electronics manufacturing industry, we've been hit by the same issue (plug top chargers dying en-mass). Other companies that use switch mode PSUs had exactly the same problem.

I use Mac for as much as I can because, like Don, I find I can just get the job done without worrying about the machine! (Composing and producing music, photography, video, surfing, email). I would definitely buy another Mac... but that's just me YMMV.
