Why are we having this debate ?
Because to me the most important part of any computer is the file system and filemanager an area in which Windows is very poor.

Example in in XP copying files in Explorer you get a message that says 8 min. left then one saying 5 mins left, then one 30 secs left and then 6 mins left?????

And all I want to know is what type of Filemanager a Mac has?
Half Man... Half Pentax ... Half Cucumber

Pentax K-1 + K-5 and some other stuff

I think the mac OSX is based on OpenBSD as opposed to Windows based on BSOD.

The results of your poll are in line with what we might expect - mostly PC users, but a higher than average number of Mac users.

We have more than average Mac users as traditionally image makers were more likely to choose that path.

These days it doesn't make a lot of practical difference really.

I'm no geek - all I know is that my Mac just works.

My attitude is that I don't need to know exactly how my Freelander's engine works - it does. I do simple checks of fluid levels to keep it safe , I check tyre pressures , check there's enough oil, and the lights work , and anything else I let the experts deal with it.

I'm the same with my Mac - I don't know exactly how it works - it just does . I'm careful with it , I look after it , if there is a problem I get the experts to deal with it.

I leave surgery to surgeons - I'm not going to try and take out my own appendix if I get abdominal pain - that's the job for an expert .

FIle manager - what's that ?? Do I need to know this - my answer is NO - I don't .

Your view clearly is not the same as mine

Stefan - Sony Vaio desktop. Why does the all-in-one form factor make it 'not a PC'? Or do you also think the iMac is not a PC?
Tim with a PC we've a classical view of separate case with the hardware and a separate screen i only said that it doesn't look like that and more like a laptop with everything integrated into one device. And a laptop is also a PC after all but I thought you knew what i meant to say.

Actually you started the war with making a Mac vs PC question, there is no way out of it, no matter what you say or ask it's always a versus matter.
And because there is no clear answer off course there is conflict.

Actually you need to.

I don't think you've your Freelander just to look at it but you've it to drive in it and you know the components that you need to operate it and how to use them.
A Mac/PC is not different from that and a File manager is a component in the operating system you use quite often.

This site was suggested by Shaky to setup a visualization and run Mac and Linux that way on Windows.

As always Apple equipment is a lot of hot air, and prices are too. Windows is there, I do not see any advantage in either system. being a long time user of a lot of different OSses, it being DOS, Vms, OS/2, Linux, Macintosh, Windows, you name it, there is always something to complain about. So Windows is a bit slower than Linux, Apple is too much appearance, Linux is too difficult, and so on. Just use the software you need on any piece of hardware it runs on and start editing pictures.

proof that serious photographers prefer Macs.
compared to market share over all, this many mac users in a small group of photographers is significant.
Probably more so than you'd think if we were to poll the Pro's who are actually working I'd bet the number is closer to 50% if not more.

Or proof that PITA Mac users are more likely to actively seek out threads like this and bother voting in such polls?

I work in a design practice, using Macs, and there is no practical reason for us to be using Macs... in fact we have to run Windows on a 'virtual machine' simply in order to use Autocad. I can only conclude it's because designers like the 'look' of Mac hardware and software ("Oooh, shiny!"), and think PC's are for accountants

I have found a little app which makes my Mac experience slightly less painful though: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/30591/right-zoom

So wrong... killing someone would be a much lesser offense!

It is hilarious how some people cling to an OS with such fanaticism.
One can easily have fun pushing the "zealot button" and making these threads go on for weeks.

There are plenty of reason to not buy certain brands of pre-built PC... Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc...
but if you're merely speaking of building your own PC with "quality" parts and putting Windows 7 on it... not much reason to choose one over the other.

Price out equivalent hardware, bundled software and support, you'll find the PC is rarely much less.
Windows 7 64bit is now supremely stable, regardless of the overly overt UI. I would say it is finally as stable as Linux and Mac.

I really would not find a reason to suggest one OS over the other beyond personal preference and comfort level in using the OS.

My personal comfort level, start up Terminal or PowerShell and let the UI sit idle.
No practical reason for a graphical OS.
The OS is simply a means to an end -- running the applications you need.

Can't comment on Linux/Mac stability, but using Win7 x64 10+ hours a day, I'd agree that it's good. Loving the UI compared with XP.

However, at risk of going way off topic and not pouring petrol on the Mac vs PC flame wars, there's one huge caveat...

Be very careful if you're doing all the following:

- running Win7 x64
- doing .NET development using Visual Studio 2010
- targeting x86 platforms
- compiling for .NET 3.5

PM me if you need the details, but it's a disaster of gargantuan proportions, so much so that I'm now doing all my development on a Win7 x86 virtual machine, inside the x64 host.

... and seriously considering going back to 32 bit Win7.

____

Edit... and back on a photography theme, it also took some serious hacking to get my Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED to work on x64. No credit to me, except for Googling, nor to Nikon for not being ***ed to keep their drivers up to date.
