Meteor Shower

Anybody out there looking for the Persied Meteor Shower. Supposed to be the best display for years. Bit cloudy here but it's clearing. Any Northern Hemisphere location - out of light pollution should be good. Fingers crossed.

I'm going for a look later, if the clouds shift. We have just had some really inky black low cloud shift over, with a bit of luck it will blow out to sea before 11:00

Hi Techno - Well its staying clearer here but up where you are should be better pollution wise if you can get a cloud gap. I have set up K20D with a Sig 15m 1:2 EX. Lets be lucky

a couple tips for meteors...
don't rule out wide to moderate tele's.....
if you aren't shooting with a telescope, don't fret it... little white streaks against black sky is of little visual appeal to anybody but an astronomer, and they got better lenses for this that you do anyways...


SHOOT SOME VIDEO, your d-slrs big sensor and fast glass will produce amazing results for this type of event...


shoot at dusk when there's still some residual daylight...
shoot out in the country, where the lightscatter from the city lights won't overpower your view...

find something interesting for the foreground, bridges, rock formations, barns or landscapes, etc...
get the foreground and the sky....

start at f8 and bracket your shutterspeeds.....

I have a tree in near focus. Never tried video. It's in my back garden! Timing wise it won't happen here until it's pretty dark. What do you think of me using a 15mm??

Techo - It's clouding over here too.

Good tips. I'm going out in an hour or so. Skies have just cleared. We are in complete darkness so probably won't get any interesting shots but I'll enjoy what should be a spectacular display.

Tomorrow evening just after sunset the crescent Moon will be in conjunction with Venus, Mars and Saturn. Should be good.

Is Limousin north or south? Excuse my ignorance - If north more hope for us all in UK!

Set up a couple of camping chairs facing north east and was greeted with a meteor buzzing off to my left. Nothing for the following 10 minutes though. Skies have cleared nicely here in SE England, but light pollution is unavoidable. Pouring a nice cold Peroni, then off to settle down and watch & wait!

Tony - Lucky s.d Temp here has dropped to 57f or 14c and outside humidity gone up to 87% - so we are in for a soaking.Bought my stuff in from the garden.May look out later. And I am only next door in Kent!Anybody get anything lets see it

Raining here at the moment, no chance of anything.

Humidity is certainly up - the camping chairs are damp already! Come in for a few minutes as nothing's happening. Back out at 11 (I've told my 8 yr old son I'll wake him if there are fireworks!!)

Stood in the back garden. Saw nothing. Now have a sore neck!

Rail pelting in the back yard, no show, am off to bed. Happy hunting
