Does an Image Need a Caption?

A comment in the gallery prompts me to ask if we think an image needs a caption, or even an explanation? Or should it be sufficient as it is, after all a picture is supposed to be worth a thousand words...

But a snappy title can clinch an image, telling us that it is intended as serious, dramatic, humorous, ironic, or whatever. Obviously some subjects need some text, perhaps in a factual article, but do general pictorial ones need the same?

I think not John.

A simple caption, at most, sometimes to clarify an image. I try to add useful info in captions, but sometimes leave the box blank.

I like to give all of my images a title if possible. It can get difficult if I've just taken 10 photos of seagulls though!

Is that what you mean or are you thinking more along the lines of a caption in a newspaper (e.g. a sentence or two).

I think a title can be useful, but surely, if a caption is necessary, then it is making up for something lacking in the shot?

But I had to go back and check to see what, if any, captions I'd added. Recently they have just been statements like " Fish being smoked", probably superfluous, come to think of it!

I'm usually in the 'no caption' camp.

Obviously, if the picture is intended to document a very specific story, then as much or as little supplementary information as appropriate is perfectly fine.

The trouble with captions is that it forces you to look at a picture in a particular way. For factual documentary, this is a good thing.

But as soon as you move away from this, the caption overlays one's impression with the photographer's. My preference is usually to not have this - and as Ted says, it does often strike me that it's compensating somehow. Not always of course - 'September morning west of Keswick' would be fine, whereas I'd balk at 'Misty dreaming', for a landscape shot in the Lake District shortly after dawn.

Particularly for the comps - if what links the photo to the theme is so tenuous as to need one, one might almost argue that a caption constitutes an unfair advantage.

On the other hand, a well-formulated title could be an eye catcher when posting a picture in the Your Photos section...

Some people make better captions than they do photographs.
Others can't come up with caption to save their life.

It should be entirely optional....superflous ones such as "man in street", "steam train at Euston" are just a waste of time (both for the photographer and the viewer.

On the other hand, titles for sets/collections of photographs can be very useful!

Indeed like book or film titles, it's a bit off a teaser.

I'm not keen on captions beyond possibly something simple stating where the image was taken.

It depends on the audience. If you have tedious relatives who say "what're we looking at here" rather than actually looking at the photo and working out what it is then captions in simple language can be useful...

I'm with ChrisA on this.

Captions - sometimes; factual lables - sometimes; nothing at all - sometimes.

Looking at three of my favourite shots (taken with three different brands of equipment ), there is only one might benefit from a caption, or a lable, or both. If I were that way inclined, the third shot could have several (different) words attached to it; they might explain the where and when, but would add nothing to the image. I used it as my (office PC) Windows wallpaper for some years, and it usually attracted comments like: "That's nice, where is it?". No-one remarked on the composition! And that, surely is getting back to John's original post.

In my opinion:

A Title is a name given to a photo for cataloguing or reference purposes. A title may also help set the mood of the photo or avoid misunderstanding.

A Caption is a line of text which helps describe the photo, or explain its relevance.

I consider a Title necessary, in order to give the photo a handle for Photographic Society competitions and for Exhibition entries.
Friendly Regards
Graham
