LCD screen protectors

I recently bought a GGS one and its really good. Its quite thick the material so it definitely protects the screen...Just make sure you clean the screen well before you put one on. I cleaned it 3 times before I did just to be safe !

I use it for it's anti-glare properties not so much for protection but for visibility in bright sun conditions.

I have a screen protector on my KR, there are bubbles and the screen protector is scratched. Just wondering if I am putting up with the crap, and saving the glass for the next owner.

Thinking of removing it.

But I have one on my phone because the phone was always covered in fingerprints, while the screen protector doesnt seem to collect the fingerprints.

I agree with the post above, the screensavers just degrade the quality and I'm not sure how much good they do. I've never scratched the screen on any of my three DSLR's (K-m, K-x, K-5).

Dented the screen on my A900 the day I bought it and cracked one on my D3 when I had it. Maybe I'm just clumsy or a bit brutish with my gear? It does happen...
The ACMAXX one I use has a scratch proof UV Coating on it which seems to help with viewing outdoors, well I percieve that it does anyway...

To each his/her own. Some of us want to protect our investment. I have been using screen protectors since I had my K10D and no my K5 also has one.

No dirt ha gotten underneath the screen and between the LCD as there is a seal around the glass.

I find that Pentax LCD screens are fairly tough and do not scratch easily. I never used them on K10 or K20 and when I sold them there was no sign of scratches or abrasions.

However other brands do not do so well. Leica M9s have notoriously easy to scratch screens and some of the Ricoh cameras have an anti-reflective coating that wears off easily with use.

I agree with Jules that the ACMAXX protectors are very good being made of a a tough polycarbonate that does not scratch easily. They also fit easily and look as if they are an original part of the camera.

I do not favour glass protectors as they can shatter on impact and the cheap stick on films always seem to get bubbles of air under them.

On balance, I prefer to protect the screen as it is potentially one of the most easily damaged items on the camera.

After a few days use, one of the side supports broke/got lost, but left the screen protector in-place - and it's still there today because I prefer the device WITHOUT the hood (kept "getting in the way)!

OTOH, I prefer even more the collapsible bellows-type hoods that I was able to get for the GX-10 and my small Canon compact - They are
- velcroed in-place and you can adjust the depth of the bellows to suit the available light, or remove almost the whole thing
- when in-place and collapsed they provide quite a lot of protection for the screen without affecting the image
- have no easily broken bits, or sharp edges to stab you in the eye
- WERE dirt cheap!

Sadly they never seemed to make one big enough for the K-5 - and now they seem to have almost completely disappeared from the market (at least in the UK)

So I have just done a search of the forum for broken screen & found just two mentions of screen damage on a Pentax SLR without using a screen protector, a few for the p & s but I would guess this is down to the p & s cameras being pocketable.

So draw your own conclusions...

I agree that the Pentax LCD screens are pretty tough and using a screen protector is probably unnecessary. This does not apply to other brands or the pocketable point and shoots.

I broke my screen and LCd on a Samsung compact I had a couple of years ago. it happened cos it was in my pocket and I sat on it. A screen 'protector' wouldn't have helped

I'm glad to hear how resiliant Pentax screens are to scratches. Every other device I've had always accumulates a number of scratches eventually. Perhaps I'll try it without one now.
