Have you tried taking the card out and re reinserting it?
You could also try to format the card in the camera.

Do you get the preview screen with the shutter/aperture, etc data displayed? It may be something as simple as you accidentally nudging a button, to a loose/broken wire connecting the screen to the mainboard. It might clear itself if you remove the battery for a couple of mins, then re-insert it.

Also try recharging the battery in case it has coincidentally just run out.

Thanks for the ideas - I don't have a preview screen info - it is blank. I am trying the "remove battery" routine at the moment ( it is fully charged ).

Looks like a case of heavy static getting on the card and passing to the camera?

Static would have wiped the card out totally. Static electricity and electronics are not a good combination, I'm afraid!
