This is the same as all the "UV-filter or not" threads...

I personally don't use screen protection... My screen does have a few surface scratches... If I upgrade my K-x will be kept as a second (night missions in rough neighbourhoods) camera, so I'm not overly bothered...

If I scratched a lens however... Mortified that I didn't have a UV on it!!

Well, old Smeggy seems to possess quite an arrogant streak.

For one who doesn't like to worry if and what sort of screen protector
to use, he seems to worry greatly what 50mm lens he should use.

Also the comment about 'you should start questioning why you're into the photography game in the first place. is in my opinion totally out of place.
Surely not all of us here are professional photographers . For me it is a great hobby. I like to make pictures to the best of my ability and I also like to treat my camera gear with care.
I don’t have to run around with a camera with the paint worn on the edges, just to show what a tough photographer I am and dreaming of dragging the camera trough mud and snow on some dangerous adventure.

I am quite happy to mount my camera on a tripod if possible after I've seen something I like and then press the button.

I remember when the first black painted Cameras came on the market. Some keen professionals took fine sandpaper and took the paint of on the edges to show, how professional they are.

I am an electronics engineer by trade. My work tools, be they mechanical or electrical, are looked after as much as possible. I don't need to thrash them , just to show how good I am.

I admit, I use a screen protector on my K5. The protector cost me 7 Dollars and the camera over 1000.

I only use the screen for setting up the camera parameters and sometimes to have a quick glance at the last shot I took. But It makes me feel better when I know I can wipe fingermarks etc of the screen and it is protected from scratches.

I use the viewfinder for taking. That’s what I bought a SLR for.

So please Smeggy, be a bit more understanding how other people see photography.

Kind Regards, Horst

When I use the camera on a neck strap , I find that the LCD comes into contact with various jacket buttons and maybe the zip. For this reason I use a self adhesive protector which I bought from a local camera shop and in just over a year I have replaced it once as it was apparent that it was getting some wear and was less translucent than it had been originally. When the time comes to sell or part exchange the condition of the LCD will certainly come into the equation. I also use a strapbuddy attached to the tripod bush which makes the camera hang lens downwards rather than straight ahead and this is an alternative solution.

Being the sort of person who stuffs as much stuff into my camera bag as possible (which I know I shouldn't do) I now have a fairly substantial scratched patch on my K20D's screen from a long car journey where something was rubbing where it shouldn't. If I had fitted my £1 sticky screen protector (as my wife made me do for the K10D) all would be well. As it is, it isn't.

As with many things (clear filters, battery grips, tripods...) it depends so much on the person using the equipment. Some of us are extremely accident prone and kit gets damaged in use and therefore a few proactive measures are worth it. If, however, you're the sort of person who never drops things, has accidents or otherwise causes anything to suffer in use, please feel to save yourselves a quid or two.

This is perhaps one of the most meaningless, pointless and arrogant comments I have seen on this forum, and over the years I have seen a few.

For some, it's a comfort factor.

If your one of those owners that like to keep their kit pristine and blemish free to keep up the resale value then use a protector.

I have protectors on my K5's screens since new, for peace of mind. No problem with quality, no dust inside, just perfect. I think it is Acmaxx.

Never considered whether this disqualifies me as a photographer....

Are LCD screens protectors a good idea or are the newest screens so well made that they do not need protecting?

If they are useful which are the best and where can you get them at a reasonable price?

Dave
I have always used the clear skin type protectors on my cameras.

It's common sense really Dave, as it's easy to replace a scratched skin, it's also cheap.

It's a very expensive repair to replace a scratched LCD screen!

Well seeing is Horst has, for some reason, brought up the implication that not using protection is the sign of a tough photographer

I'm so tough I don't even use a body. I just take the internals out bare in all kinds of weathers and terrains
