You can partly remove moire in Photoshop, which is OK if
you only have a couple to do..... bit of a bugger if it's
a 500 shot wedding though

Taken thousands of shots at weddings with the K-5iis Algi, along with Mr. Wilson who uses two of them at weddings and neither of us has ever had any moire on any of the images! So, we don't even need Lightroom (as I'm sure Steve never has where moire is concerned) as the problem isn't there in the first place!

I think it's time you stopped convincing yourself there's an issue and buy yourself a K-5iis to put your mind at rest I don't know how you sleep at night worrying about it.

Cheers

Well said David, I have now taken a couple of thousand photos and had one that showed moire and I think that would have shown whatever camera I was using. The thread is on here somewhere called "I got moire"

A lot of the photos you've posted have moire and it only seems
to be the K-5iiS ones

The 11. Details of Genoa tower/dome in the OOF area has it'

In the 2nd picture showing the blue flowers in the steel rod
support frame... (also in your portfolio)

Plus others on handrails etc. Plus these are only small
photos.

I think it must be your screen resolution Algi, I can't see anything untoward here.

I can't see it either! This is so funny it's untrue. What you seem to be totally ignoring Algi is that these images have been re-sized and compressed! Anyway, please tell me where the moire is in this one (no.11):

link

If you're meaning on the top of the building in the distance this is actually the tiles on the roof!! WOW even in OOF areas on the K-5iis you can still see the fine details! What a camera!

Also, please point out exactly where in the blue flowers it is on this one (no.2):

link

I really do think you are going off your head and confusing compression artefacts with moire. Don't forget, I've got the full size versions of these and I can tell you categorically there's no moire in them. Perhaps the method of compression I'm using to re-size images is creating a few jagged edges for the pixel peepers out there (usually bicubic sharper, sometimes ordinary bicubic in photoshop), but how you can say that the images in my portfolio have moire is very bizarre indeed.

Regards
David

Sorry Algi, I can't make it out either, this is moire and there is no evidence of it in Dave's photos.
If I open the original and zoom in the moire changes it's pattern and at no point does it go away. I think what you are seeing is the compression artifacts.

When I did my comparison tests (K5II vs 's') there was one small item that was completely swamped in moire effect on the 's' image, and the 'non-s' version had none of it at all - a clear difference on a small item with a ribbed & repeated texture. This was the effect of the aa filter removal.

It makes sense to explore the circumstances in which that effect is likely to occur, so that everyone can make their own judgement and choice based on what and how they shoot - it is probably a combination of certain textures with repeating pattern and particular lighting effects, and / or the angles of view etc etc. I imagine there will always be an element of unpredictability to it.

This exploration should be separate from the matter of whether individual users feel there is any issue with moire in their own images. It is either there or not, true, but the significance of it will vary from person to person. Some will be content to accept it, remove it if possible, or even not look for it. Others will take a more detailed approach.

Looking at David's Genoa image, what I can say firstly is that it does not seem to have been cleaned up at all in terms of colour noise reduction. Most areas contain significant colour noise patterns, including the OOF zones on the dome and patterned wall to the left, which are swamped in blue & yellow noise. Even the in-focus foreground, the black areas of the sign for example, are covered in a pinky noise effect. The sky is speckled with fine luminance noise also. The yellow brickwork on the left side is riddled with red / yellow & blue noise also.

David, none of this is any critisism of you or your shot artistically! Its just an example we have in front of us - this noise issue would be fairly easy to clean up, its just a technical matter.

Those OOF areas that Algi refers to do have repeating patterns in the textures, and the noise layout does appear to be layered - IMO it would be better to consider the image after the significant colour noise was eliminated, to see what was underneath in order to judge if moire was an issue.
