It is odd though. Exposure is spot on if I set the camera to Av and ignore the aperture control on the lens, this goes for all pre-A series.

My K 55mm f1.8 must have been the bargain of the year then - £8.50 on ebay, nothing whatsoever wrong with it apart from a small amount of dust!

I'll give you £20 for that crappy lens
seriously man, for that price it's a daylight robbery! Enjoy it, it's very sweet lens

The St Albans shop is called Clarks Camera Centre Ltd but they don't seem to have a website. I tend to stand and stare through their window when doing my shopping on a Saturday afternoon.

Shame they don't
Didn't you see any Pentax wide angle prime there last time?
I mean something like 15/18/20mm??

No, sorry. Nothing that interesting. I bought an AF500FTZ flash last time I was there. K.

Oh, don't worry, I do! It was the first manual prime I bought, at the price I reckoned it was worth a try. I did end up spending another £8 for an original lens cap but I still think it was worth the money. It makes pretty much all modern lenses feel cheap and flimsy, and the proportions look perfect on a DSLR.

There is a lens that was offered in both the K and M series, the 80-200mm f4.5. Pentax simply changed the lettering on the barrel when K series production stopped, although they later went on to redesign the lens completely. I have a version 1 M series version of this lens and it's a very nice piece of glassware. One of those lenses that you feel the urge to get out and have a play with as it's such a pleasure to handle. Mine was a £20 impulse buy that turned out to be optically and mechanically perfect with only some paint wear to show for its years.

Easy way to tell it apart from the version 2 - the earlier lens has a chrome ring where the grip meets the section of the barrel that has the lettering on, the version 2 has no chrome on it.

£16 for K55/1.8 with caps.... probably best spent £16 ever!
I had to pay £59 for mine to be shipped from Ireland, with generic caps! I got Pentax rear cap for it but still only managed to get newest DA cap design for the front, it's quite hard to get hold of original K series caps....

I'm not sure how original mine is. I found a black plastic cap with "Asahi Pentax" lettering on a crinkled background (as opposed to the smooth background on the M series and A series). A bit of research suggested that this was the right vintage, so I paid up.

The rear cap is a flexible plastic push-on job with "Asahi" on, which may or may not be period correct but was sitting in my spares box when the lens turned up without one. It looks identical to the rear caps supplied with current lenses, but with lettering.

It also takes 52mm filters, just like my kit lens!

The crinkly background is the right one (I got the orginal cap with my 135mm). The push on rear caps are the cheap ones usually shipped with kits lenses etc. When the A series lenses came out the rear caps started sporting a flange to cover the contacts. There is a post about that somewhere if you can find it!

Aha, yes, that would make sense. I have another push-on rear cap without that flange, so that may be more correct.

Sourcing original front caps isn't just OCD. The Pentax caps look better and are far better at staying on the lens than the cheap unbranded caps. After that, you might as well source one of the right style for the lens!

Talking of lens caps I splashed out and replaced all my lens caps with the metal screw in type, for no other reason than that they look so good and their tactile pleasure.

Either a 55/1.8 or a 50/1.4. No 50/1.8 produced in screw mount as far as I am aware, and the k-mount went to 50/1.7 (that 0.1 of an f-stop makes all the difference )

How very queer !! I checked the receipt again and it did say 50 1.8 - just been into the drawers of treasure and found a 1.4 50mm - I`ll have to email Uckfield and see what Emma has on the ES.

Well spotted axl - but if you consult Cecchi pp 96-97 there WAS a 50mm f 1.8 SMTAK six elements and f/16 minimum aperture between 1971 & 1975

curious !

I`ll check the lens catalogues tomorrow - I put em in the loft for safety - I`ve got them all up there somewhere dating back to the Asahi days.
