Apple Engineer Told Jobs IPhone Antenna Might Cut Calls

Apple Inc.’s senior antenna expert voiced concern to Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs in the early design phase of the iPhone 4 that the antenna design could lead to dropped calls, a person familiar with the matter said.

Last year, Ruben Caballero, a senior engineer and antenna expert, informed Apple’s management the device’s design may cause reception problems, said the person, who is not authorized to speak on Apple’s behalf and asked not to be identified. A carrier partner also raised concerns about the antenna before the device’s June 24 release, according to another person familiar with the situation.

Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Apple, declined to comment and said he wouldn’t make Caballero available for an interview. Caballero didn’t respond to a call and an e-mail seeking comment. Apple plans to hold a press conference tomorrow about the device. Dowling declined to elaborate on what will be discussed.

It will be very interesting to see what comes out of the scheduled press conference for tomorrow. One thing is certain though; bad news is invariably released on a Friday to minimise the impact on the ‘news cycle’.

Wow Shaky you've got issues!
I can give you some therapy for that Mac/Jobs hatred £60/hr or more cheaply, just let it go man - it's really eating you up.

Mine works fine
Jobs can say what he likes. I couldn't give a damn.

Yup, my whole body is actually twisted with rage and hatred.

In fact the issue here that is you are projecting your own degree of emotional engagement onto me.

I am merely an interested observer as a short seller of Apple stock. And I have no emotional issues with that whatsover for now .

Good, that's OK then

Mark, good call re therapy

I've heard great things about the camera but phone cams, even the Nokia N series, never seem to justify the praise they get in reviews. So is it merely good compared to other phone cameras or is it (like some reviewers are saying) approaching low-end P&S camera quality?

Just looking for reasons to upgrade!

very quick appraisal - noisy, but nice grain in low light (not smudged by noise control). Fast focusing, good close up.
This image - my 3rd picture while 'un-crating' it - is straight out of the camera untouched and taken in low light. (click to see original)

BTW the grain on the monitor is the finish on the mac mostly

Video is brilliant! especially in good light (as always). I took a picture of my daughter on a swing and watched it full screen on my 26 inch display - fab!
I can't give comparisons except against my steam driven Sony Ericson (given to me) and it blows that out of the water.

The touch-screen focusing is a joy to use.
Everything is just so slick and well thought out.
I am currently having some issues with texting right now - but I am certain that is me not knowing how to use the keyboard.
I have no interest in trying to big this thing up, I needed it's display more than anything and that alone is worth the price. BTW, I read my first e-book last night in bed

US Senator Jumps Into IPhone Antenna Fray, Urges Free Fix
Last update: 7/15/2010 2:27:03 PM

By Scott Morrison
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)--The mounting controversy over the antenna design in Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPhone 4 has hit a receptive ear in Washington, as a prominent U.S. Senator on Thursday urged the company to come up with a "permanent fix" to the problem at no cost to customers.

In a letter to Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs, Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D., N.Y.) asked the Cupertino, Calif. company to provide customers with a clearly written explanation of the cause of the iPhone 4's reception problem and "make a public commitment to remedy it free of charge."

While Apple has largely downplayed the matter, Schumer's letter suggests that Apple's public-relations crisis could continue to grow until the hardware maker comes up reasonable solution.

Apple has been plagued with user complaints about dropped calls when the phone is held in a way that covers part of the antenna, which is built into a stainless steel band around the phone's frame. Antenna-design experts have said the design makes the iPhone 4 more susceptible to reception issues.

Schumer said the solutions offered so far by Apple for dealing with the so-called "death grip" malfunction-such as holding the device differently, or buying a cover for it-seem to be insufficient because they unfairly place the burden on consumers for resolving the problem.

Apple has scheduled a news conference for Friday concerning its iPhone 4, prompting company watchers to speculate that it will offer a solution. An Apple spokesman declined to provide further details. Schumer's letter noted that earlier this week Consumer Reports magazine said it wouldn't recommend the iPhone 4 and suggested it had a hardware defect.

A recall of the device is unlikely, because the problem doesn't affect safety and only occurs for some users in certain situations. But financial analysts said Apple could give away its $29 rubber "bumper" case, which they said would solve the antenna reception problem. Analysts estimate that such action would cost Apple $1 to $5 a phone.

Wow that looks pretty good at 1:1, even that dark area between mac and keyboard. 1/15 second? There's no SR is there? I wonder what the 3.85 focal length means?

Humph, I guess I should see if there are any upgrade packages from a 3G! Might even sell a lens to fund it

I'm a bit confused, what else could it mean but focal length?

Shock revelation -- Apple co-founder and man without forked tongue Steve “The Woz” Wozniak” has verified the iPhone 4 reception flaw. In addition he offers an ingenious solution: carry a second phone that actually works. Good 'un Woz
