iPhone or Google Nexus?

K, I'm starting a new job soon and I have the choice of a getting a iPhone or a Google Nexus phone. Which one should I get? Let see it!

I was keen on the Nexus, until it took 5 months to come out in the UK, was overpriced, and was found to run flat in under a day!

I'm now museing about the new iPhone when it comes out.

Its a dilemma - sell your soul to Jobs or to Google...

You could buy a K7 for less than the cost of either... and I bet I know which would last longer...

I'd go iPhone over Nexus. Are they the only two choices?

Yeah the Samsung Wave appears to have one of the best screens out there right now.
And it has bluethooth 3.0 and 802.11n and it keeps running for 1.5 to 2 days with extensive use.
Don't know how long the iPhone goes on with his battery though.

Only the samsung software for the PC is a pain to use I believe

It's shitty timing because I'd love an iPhone 4G, but they're just not ready to order!! Boo! But yeah, those are the two I've narrowed it down to in terms of my preference.

HTC desire - it's the same core as the nexus and you'll get it for next to nothing on a contract. Absolutely love mine...

Nokia 6310i .. best business phone ever made.
1 week battery life.. even has bluetooth (and a calculator of sorts)

The daddy of all business phones. People still want to buy them even now.

I'm not sure that £840 counts as "next to nothing"

I did have a Nokia 6310i phone, but the keyboard started to malfunction. It was the best mobile I've ever had. Still resides in my drawer, have plans to clean the keyboard and start using it again.

iPhone or Google Nexus or 'open up another can of worms!'

Think everyone will know my preference on this one, so I'm just gonna make a load of comments in no particular order:-

1st point to Whelmed is the obvious one, what do you need from your phone?

Google have stopped selling the Nexus one directly, make of that what you will.

The next iPhone was announced this week, it is called iPhone 4, it is not called iPhone 4G, we do not have 4G networks in the UK.

When faced with 2 choices, I'm not going to suggest a 3rd different one with PC software that is a pain to use. BTW the new iPhone has by far the highest resolution screen on any current or known to be coming phone, with the highest ppi.

The iPhone 4 (not iPhone 4G) is available to order next week, and available to buy in 2 weeks. With the probability that you will be signing up to a 18-24mth contract, surely 2 weeks is not that far away so that you can at least try them to see which one you prefer?

The Nokia 6310i IS the best phone ever made, and when one comes in the charity box, it will sell in no matter what condition by the end of the week! People DO still love 'em, and DO still want them! Once got 10 days battery out of mine!

The iPhone can have emails in real time, this is called 'push email' it's how Blackberry's became popular as they were the 1st to do it. My iPhone has push email, it can have push email from Microsoft Exchange as well if that's what your new job uses. It is very easy to set up.

The Xperia X10 has just come out, it runs Android 1.6. Not Android 2 which is out, or Android 2.1 or Android 2.2. This, to me is a very simple reason to avoid it, just could not have a phone from a company with that way of thinking, it's obsolete at launch for crying out loud!

As with photography, you really do need to work out what you need from your phone before you can make the choice thats best for you. I've been in the phone game in one form or the other for over 12 years, and always just blindly said Nokia was where it was at, it's all I bought for 10 years after all. I look at the current range, and frankly, laugh.

I think Blackberries are awful, the biggest problem with Windows phones is that they have Windows on them, Android looks promising and needs work, but the market is so fragmented it gets confusing where it doesn't need to, Symbian is the market leading OS and is probably the worst out of the lot. WebOS on the Palm Pre would probably have been my choice had there been no iPhone, but with it now being owned by HP, one of the chief OS designers going back to work for Apple etc. you just cannot be sure what will even happen to it.

Which leads me back to the iPhone. When the 1st iPhone came out, I refused to get one, no 3G on a smart phone was laughable, pathetic even, I even had to raise my voice in the shop and almost shout, 'I don't want a bloody iPhone, I want a Nokia E90!' It was the right choice at the time, then 8 months later the iPhone 3G and the App Store came out and I've not looked back since.

My main reasons for choosing an iPhone now mainly centre around being one part of a far larger ecosystem, so my needs will be different from yours. When you see a full working combination of Mac, Aperture 3, photo libraries, mobile me, galleries and the iPhone all working seamlessly, it becomes the main way of enjoying my photos, as I can have them all on my phone, thats right, all of em, at the click of a button, at one time I had over 7,000 photos on my phone, but thats down to around 5,000 now!

If you are thinking that music will play a part for you, then just think about what your options are for controlling the music that is on your phone in a car. The Ipod dock is a car industry standard, There is I believe no other complete option for any other phone.

Sat Nav is another consideration, and it does now look like that the excellent Google Nav that is free for Android users (well, some of 'em at least!) will not be coming to the iPhone. Even though the iPhone has many options from £5 upto £60 for Tom Tom, Google Nav has many options that I don't think that any of the others will even get.

I could have just given a one word response 'iPhone', but it needs more input than that, so thought that it would be prudent to at least explain some of my reasons to see if it could help with your decision making, and also to correct a lot of mistakes that I see in every conversation about phones. Nothing is perfect (don't even think of mentioning the words iPhone, O2 & tethering in the same sentence to me!), but if anyone within a 40 mile radius is doing a midnight launch, you will find me there getting my new 32GB iPhone 4, in white!

Don't believe everything you hear This is a load of cobblers, you can have full push email if you want (Exchange, or Gmail), or have the phone automatically check every 15 minutes (regular POP mail) When you have mails you get a little status badge on the email app's icon on your homepage.

How is the Policy of the iPhone in regards to updates?
I believe with the iThouch and the iPad you need to pay some money for a major upgrade, is that the same with the iPhone?

Unlocker, are you also going to get such coloured bumper for the iPhone 4, they picked some wrong colours i think, they are so bright

Stefan, if I recall correctly the last major upgrade cost iPod Touch users $10. There was supposedly some accountancy trickery going on, something to do with the financial year, and because the iPhone is subscription based it didn't incur the charge. I never quite understood the explanation, I'm sure you can Google it if you're really so interested.
