I had a Compaq TC1000 tablet PC, and I have to say I didn't really get on with it. I never used the touch screen or the stylus as to be honest it was much simpler to type things in with the keyboard. It was also slow and prone to overheating.

Touch screens do have their place, but for proper input you need a mouse/touchpad and a keyboard. Correcting errors in handwriting recognition software takes much longer than simply typing it all in.

I think the embiggened ipod touch is nice, an axiotroned macbook would be more useful...

but right now I want the new mac pro.
liable to change my mind next week though.

Well done Apple. Cos the one thing we are all missing in our lives is another screen to look at.

If I already have a mobile phone, Ipod, Ipaq (pocket PC), Net-book PC, laptop PC (x2), tower/desktop PC (x3) why do I need one?

Sorry folks, and I don't mean to be hurtful, but the majority of you don't appear to know anything about what you're talking about.

1. Repeatedly calling it a Maxipad is something my 3 year old son would think is funny.
2. It is running on some of the core functions of OS X, but it isn't the same as Mac OS X.
3. If it ran on ModBook principles it wouldn't have 10 hours battery life. Given the size limitations on the battery it would probably be closer to 1 hour.
4. I don't know why anyone is talking about handwriting recognition.
5. If you watched the keynote you'd understand that this device is positioned between mobile phones and netbooks. You might not think you need one, but on the other hand about a billion people said the same thing about the iPhone when it launched.

Apple don't seem to have noticed that tablets are a dead end. They are too large to be trivially portable (because of the screen size they're more difficult even than a netbook) and too weak to replace a laptop.

The difference to the iPhone is that the iPhone took a device which people clearly wanted (an internet connected smartphone, since they'd been buying them from HTC, Blackberry etc. for a couple of years) and made it much better. The iPad, on the other hand, takes a device that people have long since decided they don't want, makes it worse (through inability to multitask and to run software of the user's choice) and tells them they want it simply because it has an Apple logo.

Sure, the Mobs acolytes will buy them, but I'd be very surprised if the teams responsible for the Dell Mini or Amazon Kindle are quaking in their boots.

I don't see how the tablet market can be dead when the Kindle has been doing pretty damn well.

Oddly enough I think the Kindle guys ARE quaking in their boots. The new Kindle DX is about $10 cheaper than the entry level iPad. Sure it has great battery life and the e-ink screen has it's advantages. But on the other hand there are SO many areas where the Kindle simply cannot compete with the iPad (e.g. colour, movies, audio, web, email, games)

I am afraid I bought an Archos 5.

With 250GB hard drive, 4.8 inch screen, USB hoast (via additional clip on add-on) and an ability to directly display Pentax Pef files (tested for both K10D and K-7 pef files), how can I go wrong?

Photo backup and review in the field, music and films with about 4-22 hours battery depending on how much video you are using - and I can use a little USB battery adaptor with 4 AAAs to add more battery time. Who needs an iPad? Oh and it fits in my trouser pocket in the "are you pleased to see me, or is that an Archos in your pocket?" fashion. Has WiFi.

The only downside - I can't play K-7 video, except for the 640 resolution. Though the device can play 720p, it only does it at 24fpf, our K-7s do it at 30fpf - bummer, but I think I can live with that!

I have a phone which phones, a camera which take pictures, a PC which computes. I can borrow a laptop PC if I have to or use an image tank for when I'm away. I don't listen to music much.
I don't need anything else. Certainly not an iPad.

If the iPad had been 4G I suspect more people would be interested.

A Kindle or e-book is not intended to do all the things the iPad is. I can't imagine reading a book on an iPad screen, whereas I have seen an e-book screen, it reads very well, with no eye strain. If I were to get a new gadget it would probably be that.

I'll believe the battery life on it when it is out and in use.
