FF sensor rumors

Rumor has it that Pentax are going to use the Sony 36 mp ff sensor for the FF body. No new technology there. Sony have been using it for 2 years now and so have Nikon. I really thought that Pentax would go with something new age. Whats are your thoughts about that?

Stop moaning about something that doesn't even exist!

Now, now, no need to be rude about it.

As for the sensor, I suppose it's a rumour as things stand, but a lot of these rumours do seem to materialise, so the success rate is fairly good! As we have continually seen though, Pentax seems to be able to extract quality from Sony's sensors that other marques don't have the same success with. So the processing in camera (including the minimal processing needed for the RAW output) may make all the difference.

In terms of pixels, I guess it equates to the 24MP of the K-3. The bigger sensor needs more pixels if they keep the same pixel density - there's more space to fill.

There is one thing that you have forgot Pentax have a way of squeezing every ounce out of that sensor in speed and clarity
It may possibly be the most frames per second ff camera on the market

Wouldn't it be closer to the 16MP of the K-5 - the surface area of a full frame sensor being about 2⅓ times APSC?

Not that there's anything wrong in that? And what do you mean 'New Age'?? Something other than a CMOS sensor? We're talking a couple years here, not something which is a quantum shift in technology.
How long has the 16Mp been used in Pentax APC-S models? How long did they use the K-7 body design?
Something only has to be good, not newest thing - and if it's proven as well as good, well that's great
Pentax would be mad to launch a FF this late in the game with a spanking new never-before-seen sensor that is unproven.

I've got a feeling some of the FF crowd will never be happy (not saying that about OP).

With the K-3ii and 645Z I think it will be a strong lineup, irrespective of what happens with FF.

I agree with Steve on this. If its a good sensor and is well tried and tested then you don't gamble the future of the brand on an untested new sensor.

Algernon, did I say I was moaning? And it what word in the English language did you detect moaning? It's a forum mate with open discussion about Pentax and one of the major discussions at the moment is the excitement for the Pentax FF. Anyway, interesting comments about the sensor. If it performs like the K10 did back in its day compared to the models of that time I will be happy for sure

If it looks like a moan ...... sounds like a moan ...... it is a moan ..... even though it's about something that doesn't exist

Sadly the moaners have destroyed Pentax..... Flagship/top models such as the K-5iiS are being sold new for £350. SH gear is hard to sell or goes for about half of what it used to. This forum has shrunk from what it used to be.

Anyone looking in to buy a camera will quickly get the impression that Pentax aren't very good...... Even the new FF is no good because it uses a 2 year old sensor in the non-existent model.

There is a certain irony in that.

Meanwhile, back at the cutting edge, the new full frame lenses are getting exciting and if the new FF frame camera is as good then we'll have nothing whatsoever to moan about.

If they do go for 36MP it would be foolish to bring out just one FF camera. They need another with 16-24MP.

As Ken Rockwell says about 36MP in the D810 "for nutjobs who actually think they need 36 megapixels, while the D750 is what most people, including myself, really want."

I am a bit over this moan business. We are here to help each other not lash out, and maybe if you need to lash out on someone you should look elsewhere than the Pentax forum, and I'll say it again..... Who's moaning. Maybe we should continue this interesting topic and if we want to start a new topic about complaints we should do so
