Coded vs Decoded Generic Batteries - K-30

Hi Guys, long time since I've posted here but I have a question.

I note that generic batteries can be either "coded" or "decoded" - what's the difference in the real world (apart from about 50p)

If I've read this correctly, "coded" batteries behave exactly like the OEM battery, "decoded" batteries don't need to so - but isn't that the same thing anyway.

There plenty of threads on Can/Nik forums but they just sidetrack into OEM vs generic arguments within two posts !

Can anyone clarify.

My wife has a Panasonic Bridge camera that has a chip in to prevent the use of third party batteries. Fortunately hers came with a spare. I'm not aware Pentax have ever tried such crippling of third party product.

I've used generic batteries, including ones (Hahnel) from pro dealer SRS in four Pentax DSLR's now with no problem. My current spare off Amazon is even higher rated than the Pentax labelled DSTS make 2000 MAh (14.8watts) but lasts the same and reads correctly on the battery indicator in my K3. Generally about a third of Pentax price. None seem to have any annotation about coded or decoded as you find for example with 'chipped' pattern ink cartridges also discussed at length on here in past.

My spare batteries for both K10 and K5 are cheap ones off of Ebay.

Both work the same as the originals. I don't remember seeing anything about chips on Pentax batteries so assume they don't have them. I haven't heard any one complaining at all. Lots of discussion about the OEM v generic but i have not seen any mention of chips being used in those discussions.

In that case I'm guessing that the listings I have seen are using a template on listings that they use for Canon and Nikon batteries as well (I know my P7100 is fussy about having a coded battery)
