had it changed much? It felt like we had entered a time warp after crossing the Solent. the ferry is ridiculously expensive for what it is.

We found a great microbrewery on the IOW near the IOW Glass studios. Can't for the life of me remember the name but it was good stuff.

I cant remeber what it was like 35 years ago. Did find that driving was not as frantic as at home and in general the its was good value for money. Good food in the local pubs. Still many places to see so we are going back for a winter break in November. Dont think I would want to be their in the peak of the season. Had a cottage just outside Godshill.

Per mile, yes it is!

If you go to the US then find a microbrewery and enjoy some excellent beer. Just avoid the big names there - even worse than Heineken
Too true! Most supermarkets carry a good range of bottled beers, most bars just have 10 varieties of the same ghastly rubbish.

Why is American beer like making love in a canoe? Because it is... umm... "rather" close to water.

It`s not exactly cheap to cross from Liverpool to Douglas IOM or from Poole to Jersey either.

I nearly went to the Isle of White as a relief Hotel Manager but they sent me to Scarborough instead !

In fairness to the IOW ferry, they spend a lot of time in port loading and unloading, and little time at sea. Both have to be paid for.

The IOM ferry is a much bigger rip-off.

In the U.S.A., apart from a very few exceptions, you can't buy beer in groceries. You must get it from dedicated beer outlets, which are State operated.

In Québec, you can buy beer and wine in groceries, convenient stores, breweries ans SAQ (gov. operated liquor store). It's the only place in North America where you have so many outlet to buy beer. In the U.S.A. and the rest of Canada, you can only get beer (and any other liquor) in dedicated outlet. Québec is also the only place in Canada where you can buy beer on Sunday. And Québec is also the only place in Canada where pubs and clubs can stay open almost all night long.

I fear I was misunderstood. I myself do also want this thread to go on. I was trying to use counter psychology and slight humor to increase the number of posts in this thread and make the thread prosper and hopefully lead us to victory!!!?? Victory over... hmmm... The brands that shall not be spoken of!!!?? Alright bit more pointless than required but I'm sure I don't need to apologize??? (Did you notice how cleverly I made it possible to increase the number of posts in order to answer my silly post? Ok, not too clever I admit...) Sorry for my clumsy language, I really should write more to improve it, or less if you think my posts are intolerable.

Untrue. It varies hugely from state to state. You can certainly buy beer from ordinary grocers in NY, SC, FL and CO as I have, many times. Not so sure about wine as I rarely buy it but certainly available in grocers in SC. Spirits, on the other hand, I have only seen in special liquor stores.

Wikipedia shows only six states where beer is not available in grocers.

We have to keep this going - nearly to 100 pages.

Glad you corrected Yves, we've never had trouble buying beer in a grocery store in the US.

One time in AZ they did ask my husband for his ID - he was 60 at the time .

I have been known in US restaurants to ask what beers they have, then opt for a glass of water. And you are right about Guinness. I made the mistake of ordering one in the US once, never again! The microbrews can be really nice though, just a shame it is hard to get them on tap. I'll be in Denver in June which has one of the highest densities of microbreweries in the US.

Yum...

We really enjoyed the Pacific Northwest because of the beer. Lots of microbreweries to choose from. We would usually order a sampler from them first then decide which beer we wanted.

In fact as I recall we even did that at the Grand Canyon when we stayed there. We had the sampler before dinner, then went back and enjoyed a couple of beers and some good music after dinner, then staggered along the rim in the dark back to our room .

Hope you don't suffer from altitude sickness Kris - lots of people suffer flying into Denver, as opposed to climbing gradually into the Rockies by car.

I look forward to hearing what you think of Denver - it is on my list.
