I seem to be exceptionally lucky

Though our Delivery system has changed I still get the same actual Postman and he and I have a sensible arrangement. If the parcel won't go through my letterbox [ which is bigger than standard ] he takes it to my back door [ I'm a corner house so he passes the gate ] and drops it in a prearranged place - hidden from the street , but easy for me to check.

The other day a biggish parcel arrived and was dropped in that place [ it came by van not the postie ] and had been marked at the delivery/sorting Office as to be delivered to the back door .

Postie knows that I have problems with the front door lock [ roll on some decent weather and I can get it sorted ] and climbing the stairs to answer it - so he helps me out . Nice man
let the education continue

Be careful what you wish for.
Ours is privatised and rubbish now.
We no longer have post offices. You have to go to a shop to deal with sending stuff or buying stamps. Mostly the shop staff have had a very basic training and don't always know what is the correct or best way to send things. They all sold out of stamps before CHristmas.
The postmen have been replaced by post deliverers - part-timers, poorly paid and allowed to deliver when it suits them, which on occasion is not at all. Huge amounts of post go missing every day here - some dumped as the delivery person can't be bothered any more, some probably opened by the delivery people because it looks interesting, some just vanished in the system.

We have two other companies who also deliver mail, for businesses and the government. They deliver in theory three times a week, but in practice again it is when the delivery person can be bothered to deliver it. A couple of times we have had angry letters from the tax man wanting to know why we haven't responded to letters we've never received.

I get fantastic service from our postal system and I'm sure what is really needed is proper planning and investment in the existing system.
Best regards, John

Royal Mail leaves parcels at a local post office
Not around here, they don't.

If you are not in, or don't appear to be in, they take it back to the depot and leave a card with a number to ring to have the parcel re-delivered.

Problem is they never, never, never ever answer the phone. Or if they do they drop it back down immediately.

Then when you go to pick it up the following day (because it won't be available the same day) you find the helpful postie has taken it upon himself to try again - but you're not in, you're at the depot

Bernard.

On a more positive note, most times the postie catches me in and if he's the regular chap he will leave it with a neighbour (the standins never do that - more tha their jobs worth apparently)

I think you can nominate a "Safe" neighbour to take in your post when you are out ?

Yes I'm with you on this , the postal service when I lived in the north of England was far better than the only for profit companies. In rural areas it is a vital lifeline that will be missed if it is totally privatised...
Here the fantastic postal service is under threat, as are all public services, and the courier companies { I wont name them } will not deliver to your house or office etc .So to get a parcel you must trawl round all the courier agents in town unless the sender has put your phone number on the parcel... so as Gwyn said be careful what you wish for ... jeff....

Crazy thing is, round here, they could probably leave on the path outside the house and it would still be there a day or so later, but they act as it we live in the middle of a war zone.

The only thing we have problems with are the "scrap" metal "collectors" and they're not into cardboard boxes, bicyles (even new ones) left out by the kids appear to be fair game though

I think, even he, had a dry area above the sea. The Trent Valley is like an enormous paddy field, the sky is a dark grey, and the bit in between is 99% + humidity.

Why - Oh Why did the government initiate a hosepipe ban and a drought tsar, surely they should have thought it through, both of those together were bound to have repercussions.

Looking forward to taking picture of the pinkfoot, brent and other geese etc. it might be a long drive but at least you can see them and easily identify them unlike the LBJ's Unocker has been snapping

We have a mixed race goose couple in Spring. One Canada, one Grey. The babies are quite big now and look very unusual.

If we ever moved I would miss seeing the ducks, swans, geese and moorhens in the river from the lounge window.

We have done, the foot postie will use him.

The van driver, on the other hand seems unable to read resulting in irritating trips to the office.
