When I lived in South Lanarkshire I think my recycling bin went out once a year!

You couldn't put glass in it, paper went on the fire, I rarely bought anything in tins and most plastics couldn't be put in it either.

I noticed in Paris that there was a bottle bin on every street. I'm sure that will come too.

We have a brown bin for garden and kitchen waste, which goes for compost - twice a year we can collect free compost as a reward. That is emptied once a fortnight.
We have a green bin for other rubbish, also once a fortnight, on the other week to the brown bin. Special bags for all plastic except hard plastic (lego, garden chairs) go out the day before the brown bin, and the blue bin, for paper and cardboard goes out on the first Tuesday in the month.
Glass we have to take to a bottle bank and sort by colour.

The company which deals with all that waste sends out a calender every year just so we can keep track of it all. Actually my bins usually go out monthly since we have so little waste by the time we've split it all up. In really hot weather they go out per schedule though.

The local supermarket has a bottle bank - three different colours, a plastic bank, a paper bank and a cloth bank.

Most tins here are steel so we don't have to separate them out. Not sure I have room for any more bins, inside or outside the house!

I think we do quite well in the Wigan area. Four full sized bins plus kitchen caddy.

Green and brown bins on week one, black on alternate week plus blue once a month.

Green: kitchen and garden waste
Blue: paper and card
Black: Non-recyclable waste
Brown: Cans, plastic and glass
Best regards, John

Grey bin for glass and tins, the insert is for the paper ( no stove lit so no chance to burn it at the moment!) and a green bin for theland fill.

Plastic bottles etc get taken to a local bank.

A mile up the road the council collect those as well, but not here!

No idea why not.

The land fill is mostly over thetop packaging that's surplus to any need what so ever. Needless to say we only ever fill a third of that bin.

The family next door don't re-cycle...

...when the chips go under the rim their in for a shock..

My Mum is in her 80s and totally confused by all the different bags and bins she has. "I don't bother," she told me, "I just put it all in the black bin and hope for the best."

I have some sympathy for older people who are quite staggered by it all.

I'm all for recycling but in our small flat it's just not very practical. Currently we are still allowed to use black bags. Our charming neighbours were in the habit of putting theirs out several days before collection, ensuring a feeding frenzy for the local magpies and cats, and litter all over the pavement. But they received a visit from the local 'waste collection community facilitation officer'...

I believe a lot of paper etc intended for recycling, which nobody wants at present, is placed in storage facilities at great expense, so it could well be that your Mum is saving the council money by sending hers to land fill
