Wonderful opening ceremony.
Great entertainment, particularly "Her Majesty The Queen" with James Bond.
Brilliant!

The ceremony totally blew my expectations out of the water. The cauldron by Thomas Heatherwick was stunning.

I wasn't going to watch it but something I'd recorded finished
just before 9pm and it was on when I turned off the recorder
so I watched it.

It was very well done

I wonder how much "Green Tax" had to be paid for all the smoke and fumes generated. In the main I found it very sad, showing a past time when Britain was Great.

Stop snarking and do something positive!

It was a fabulous show! (I've revised my previously hyper-cynical snarky attitude)

I stayed up until waaaaay past my bedtime to watch the ceremony.
I thought it was wonderful. That version of Abide With Me was real goosebumps stuff, Mr Bean was funny, the Queen acting with James Bond, and wow that cauldron!
Only downside for me was Macca at the end.
I do wonder what other nations made of it all though, and whether they understood most of it.

I am so relieved David Beckham didn't light the cauldron!

The trouble with being a national treasure (Macca) is that no one tells you when your past it!

All in all it was a very good show and I enjoyed it, looked like all the visiting sportsmen/women did too. I'm not sure I understood all of it, let alone the visitors but it was definitely spectacular. Well done to all the people who made it happen.

I think if "Abide with Me" had been sung like that on the Titanic the orchestra would have jumped over the side I was fortunate to be asleep before McCartney's turn, Mrs Snap says he must have changed his hair dye as it didn't look so unnatural this time

Why were the announcements made in French first ?

You sound like you read the Daily Mail. The olympics ALWAYS announces in French first. Just like the all the ones before.

Being Danny Boyle, Abide was sung like it was in the Danny Boyle film 28 Days Later and was poignant to match the remembrance of the unspecified dead and the dancing choreographed to represent the fight between life and death. The singer Emeli Sandé, is from Aberdeen.

If your cultural reference is limited to Titanic, I suggest watching Danny Boyle films to widen your knowledge of Great British film making....

French is the language of the Olympics, Baron de Coubertin was French after all.

I loved the version of Abide With Me. It was hauntingly beautiful and moving. I thought it was very touching that they remembered those who died in the London bombings a day after London was awarded the Games.

Thanks for the singers name Dougf8 - I didn't catch it last night.

I don't read any newspapers now. I used to read the Daily Mail, liked their cryptic crossword, but now put the money saved into my "Camera Fund", one of those digital money box things, over £100 in there now, towards my next lens or whatever.

The last Olympics I can just about recall seeing ( on Pathe News ? at the cinema anyway) was the Melbourne games, oh and a fictional games in a film called "Geordie" or something where the main actor insisted he wore his dad's kilt, or I may be confusing the two , it was a long time ago. Never seen them since, either because no TV or was usually at sea when they were on. I'm hoping this time, with the multi channels I'll be able to see events other than some people running around a big circle as fast as they can.
I didn't know the announcements were always in French first, a question I would have got wrong in a quiz, so thanks for explaining it.

I stopped going to the cinema and theatre quite some time ago as even with the "Loop" system the dialog in modern films is usually so bad and well beyond my limited hearing. Only "foreign" films seem to have English sub titles. The last Japanese film I watched "Departures" was brilliant and was so well acted it didn't need dialogue or subtitles.
Sub titles on TV are often so far out of sync it's like watching early editions of "The Talkies". They must use Dragon un-naturally speaking or some such.

Will have to check the TV Times for channels to watch for the sports I enjoy watching, if any are featured.
Regards
Stan
