Hopefully there is "only" material damage, no persons hurt.

My son just posted a photo on Twitter of one of the tall ships in Harlingen listing 20degrees. twitpic.com/82l4z8 Not good.

My son's ship is minus mast at the moment so hopefully will be safe. It has survived the last few storms. The sea defences are closed there today.

Well - my new fence is still standing

My wheelie bins have been blown away from their anchor points - left them at present while I look round for something to act as an anchor chain again

It does not look like this year is of to a good start.

I'm sorry to hear this Barrie, but if the poor old dog can't stand and is suffering, it is a kindness to the dog to have it put down.

It is a very hard thing to do, and yes there will inevitably be tears, I know mate, I have been there.
Chin up Barrie, and I hope your New Year gets better.

Kindest regards,
Peter

It was pretty unbelievable; a large chunk of my neighbour's lead flat roof the size of his living room flew off bounced once in our garden cleanly chopping a garden seat in two, hit a tree 100 yards away removing a limb 18 inches thick which in turn removed a stone ball from the gate pier and the tree landed on the car. The insurance people asked if the car had been modified in any way but apart from now having a hole in the roof and a tree in it, no.

For most of yesterday our house was a local tourist attraction with an enormous piece of lead wrapped around a tree blocking half the road. I still cant believe the wind could lift something so heavy. It has now mysteriously disappeared

Dougf8, yes same car and I'm really glad I hadn't got round to repairing it. There were six cars probably written off around the corner when a tenement roof fell on them. Some amazing pics on BBC local news of a house smothered when the entire roof cladding of a tower block blew off and flew 1/4 of a mile then landed on the semi-detached.

My sister-in-law who is one street away from me lost a chimney pot which, as it slid down the roof, took a lot of slates with it , and now the chimney stack is rather wobbly

The BBC showed pics of a very modern block of flats in a mixed owners/tenancy group which is less than half a mile from me.

It's certainly been a surprise to many how badly we have been hit.

Has anyone ever noticed how the new year always tends to start with disaster and destruction?

Know what you mean 'spider.

Some houses just seem empty without a cat/dog.

We had our cat for 18 years and I had the very unpleasant task of taking her to the vet then burying her in our garden. She still gets a mention even after 5 years. I don't think we'll ever have another pet now. I do feel sorry for those who lose a pet.

I'm still not really over the sudden death of one of my dogs at the end of 2010. I still choke up when I think of her.
I don't have the same connection with the remaining dog, but I dread the day he makes a one way trip to the vet. Hopefully we have him for a few more years yet, as he is not quite 9. He is our last pet I think.

I could have done without the vet sending a 'With Sympathy' card after putting down our cats.
