Yup! although I wouldn't know as I stay tucked up in my nice warm bed till at least 9am, the wife confessed last night that by the time she'd got to work her nerves were in shreds with all the slipping and sliding the car had done

Where were the gritters

We were showered in grit on the way back from Winsford Cheshire both on the A roads and the M53 - didn`t seem to be that cold though - about 3.5 on the carmometerthingy with a little snowflake icon - ahhh ! Never had that on my 1949 Ford Prefect !!!!!!
You knew it was icy `cos your face froze almost as fast as yer toes !!

I have always had a theory that road gritting/salting, is sponsored by, all the motor/car manufactures, as more salt on the road, equals, quicker car deterioration.
The only positive thing is, the salt degreases the road surface.

Take care.

3.5 on the carmometerthingy means it was colder on the ground.

They issued a code orange here for the Northern provinces as the roads turned to ice unexpectedly. There was a big crash on the Afsluitdijk due to ice, which closed it in both directions, plus another one on one of the motorways leading to it which made it a right mess.
I am glad we didn't go to Harlingen yesterday.
We were going to go today for the Christmas market but have decided against it.

Seems unbelievable that cars once came with heaters as an EXTRA!!!!
I think the Hillman Imp or possibly a Citroen was the last!!

At least they came with starting handles if the cold flattened the battery

Citroen GS from the 70's was about the last with a starting handle

We had a GS and made use of the starting handle on occasion. We were living in a polder in the north of the Netherlands at the time and the wind was icy and a battery killer.

Aaaah ! The starting handle - brilliant idea.............mind you I had to buy flashing indicators as an extra, the semaphore arms were a bit dodgy !!! I also didn`t have a radio, seat belts, power steering, disc brakes,ABS,heated screens,airbags,4th gear, synchro, radials, two speed wipers, fogs, spots, traction control or cup holders !! On the other hand if something hit you it would bounce them off and the damage was usually limited to a scrape or ding.Cleaned monthly with Brasso it did 30mpg ( 17 1/2p GALLON )60 miles to a pint of oil and the harder the engine worked ( going up a hill ) the slower the wipers went - I always carried a sliced potato to help with rain dispersal in the winter.
Amn boy oh boy did I LEARN to drive.................

Incidentally, they use molasses and salt these days.

Apparently it will deal with much lower temperatures and/or they can use less of it.

I saw on the news yesterday a wind tubine catching fire - now there's a funny thing (well not too funny if your power is off because of it, but it wasn't generasting anyway)

Query - does anyone know how they work out how many kilos of carbon is saved for every kiowatt generated, or is it a wet finger in the air job?

Just remembered the GS heater, because it was an air-cooled engine consisted of a ball welded into the exhaust with a 4inch diam. flexipipe that went into the car..... smelt a bit as well I bought my GS off a very famous pop star, think he used it for shopping

The Alfasud was designed in Italy and so was the heater, probably when the air temp was 40deg C they must have thought..... any hotter than that and people will roast to death When it came over here there was more heat out of a peppermint in one of our winters

" Trials for offshore wind would be justified to assess load factors in UK waters, and could make a valuable contribution when suitable methods of electricity storage can be developed, for example, the reversible fuel cell. However, the sheer numbers of turbines needed to approach the 10% of generated power (not installed capacity) set as the Government’s target would have a colossal impact on the UK, penalise electricity consumers with higher prices, and lead to only modest CO2 reduction. Indeed, the knock-on effect of wind on emissions is unclear, and deserves
serious consideration" 2004 report
"By 2010, we aim to install 3,500 more turbines on and off shore. This will mean the wind industry could then be preventing the emission of up to 17m tonnes of carbon dioxide each year."
After reading 38 pages I think you were right - finger in air or up orifice !!

Feeling a bit sad this evening Decided recently, in deference to my advanced years, to give up motorcycling. So after about 60 years riding, I found a buyer for my bike today and got a fair price for it

Guess what comes next

A short break..

... followed by another Bike?

Motorcycles are in the blood, they're not just transport they're breathing, living machines!

My first car? An Austin A35, it was one year younger than me, handled terribly and was super fun. That was followed by the Landy and Baby.

Baby has now gone and Eva is just...

... so different!!!
Cheers, HG

K110+DA40, K200+DA35, K3 and a bag of lenses, bodies and other bits.

Mustn't forget the Zenits, or folders, or...

PPG entries.

My first car was a mark 1 Cortina. I loved that car, even though it was a rust bucket. Drove it all over Britain once I passed my test. I put in a fair few miles in before a passed too with my Dad or brother in the death seat. Thought nothing of driving down to Brighton or Eastbourne in it with one of them.

I should have kept the registration number too - it would have been perfect as a personalised number for me after I married.
Ah well. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I just won €100 on the lottery .

Been doing the lottery for years and the most I've won before was the price of the ticket.

Whilst a few more zeros after the 1 would have been nice I am still a happy bunny.
