Pomfret is the original name for them.

Funnily enough, though I love licorice I don't like Pomfret/Pontefract cakes.

I didn't know that, it's amazing what you can learn from photographers.

Where do you get your Liquorice Tony? I usually pick up a couple of bags at Lakeland, the "normal" black stuff. Liz prefers the Mango flavour.
I wish we could get liquorice with the same flavour as those small 1/2d sticks that were available when we were children At least Sherbet Lemons can still catch you out

Stan
Hey Stan - I use - aquarterof.co.uk - they have all the old sweets and are reasonably priced. There was a shop in Jersey I remember with some very odd flavoured liquorice ( including salted ?? )and occasionally I will buy from the health food shop in our village.

Thanks Gwyn - yes Pontefract cakes are the same things as Pomfret cakes but I always knew them as Pomfret cakes - maybe it depends on the area you come from ?

Have you seen this film of a 767 landing at Warsaw, without it's gear down?
Amazing piece of piloting skill or luck or both!

Thank it some piece of flying. I wonder how many times it happens without being filmed?

Nice work there. Most pilots would hope to be able to pull that off, I would think.

Not that I know much about the big jets, or gear-up landings for that matter, but AIUI, the engine nacelles are made good and strong, not just so that they can contain the loss of compressor blades if they ingest a bird, and bits end up flying around inside at extremely high speed.

But also so that they don't collapse and allow a wing tip to dig catastrophically into the ground in just such an eventuality as this.

If Aliengrove's around, perhaps he'd comment? Do you get that in sim training?

I don't think luck comes into it. I wouldn't fancy doing this in a 4-seater Cessna, lat alone a large jet.

It requires a very steady hand!

Even so, he had it relatively easy, with bags of fuel, plenty of time to find a nice into-wind runway, long enough to accommodate the inevitably fast approach.

No taking anything away - it was a nice job.

Whereas every time I read about the Hudson River ditching a couple of years back, my blood runs slightly cold when I think about Chesney Sullenberger's getting that Airbus down the way he did. Absolutely first class.

The passengers were fortunate to have a guy with so much gliding and military flying in his background.

Well day 2 was OK, a lot of plastering and plumbing.

The wiring is , er, interesting, still it will start to come together when the finishing plaster goes on today.

Then it should be construction time...
