..and wasn't the Gestetner the one that had purple 'negatives' that used spirit to treansfer the image/writing?
The one that was a stencil that pushed ink through it was something else...

I used these as well, I also have a round slide rule. This was my dads but I cannot remember how to use it now.

Agree about fiddling with clocks, my car clock doesn’t get changed, the instructions look far to complicated, for my simple brain to cope with. (Peugeot 207 S SW).
Take care.

I worked for Sumlock Anita in the seventys when the first calculators hit the market. Sumlock used Rockwell chips and they then took over the company and moved production from Portmouth to Mexico. I remeber the first calculator cost £99 and was sold in a leather case. How time have changed. I think I will go and play with my slide rule now

My car clock changes automatically. I also have a "radio controlled clock" in the bedroom so will be interested to see what the "real" time is when the alarm goes.Dangermouse wrote:

I've never understood the need for changing the clock back and forward. I think we should be proud to have the world using GMT for navigation etc. Never saw the point of GMT being called UTC either.
I can't remember what system the Norwegians in Honningsvag used for "Daylight Saving" in the winter, if fact I don't remember much daylight at all and of course in the summer it never really got dark

The Norwegians use CET and CEST, just as most of Western Europe does.
Portugal being so far west uses GMT and GMT+1. Finland is on EEST at the moment but tomorrow will be on EET.
Even though the prime meridian runs through France and Spain they use CET and CEST.
From 1909 until the German invasion the Netherlands used Amsterdam time (GMT +20mnutes). On May 16th 1940 the Germans introduced German time (GMT+1), but since summertime also started that day the clocks in the Netherlands went forward by 1 hour and 40 minutes!

Oh and in the US not all states have daylight saving - very confusing. Arizona is especially confusing since the state doesn't have daylight saving, but the Navajo Nation, within the state does!

GMT all year round? Sunrise would be at about 3.45am in midsummer! What a waste, and you'd throw away an hour of lovely evening sunshine in the evening - when it's not raining of course.
I'd sooner go for BST all year round... dark mornings are more acceptable than leaving work in pitch darkness every day, and at the weekend, those of us who reward ourselves with a lie-in will have more of the day left!

It's all an illusion. There are only so many hours of light regardless of what we call them. We might as well get up at 3.45am, work a day, and we'll still be travelling home in the light in summer and the dark in winter.
Why is it so unthinkable to change the time at which we do things? Funny old world....

And the hands on the clock go round and round
I just wake up and it's time to lay down,
Life gets teejus, don't it.
