Cars regularly fail to start at Schiphol due to all the interference there.
My son had a summer job there once helping people who were stranded. It improved a bit but I had it a couple of times with the Prius - I actually had to insert the key into it to get it to go.
Hope Freda is soon up and running again.
Looks like it may just be a leaky radiator for us. He has disconnected it so we have warmth and water while he orders a new one. It is a non standard size so he doesn't have it in stock. Of course.
Main worry now is the floor - it seems to have been leaking for a while, and the water has got under the laminate and probably onto the floorboards. So this weekend we will be lifting laminate and floorboards. But at least we will be warm.

Re Freda - me too .
I had heating problems last winter - hopefully since the new boiler was installed I should be OK this winter.
Hope your problem is finished soon and there's not too much damage to your floors .

I had two car horrors last December at the same time. The engine of my 8.5 year old Smart blew on the motorway when it was -10C and I had a pup in the back and couldn't stand up outside the car because of inches thick ice. To cut a long story short it wasn't worth repairing so had to buy a new one.
a week later my 3.5 year old Mercedes ML started changing gear violently, its an automatic, braking on its own and warning that every onboard system had failed. Finally a loud alarm went off and a red message read, 'Go immediately to workshop. Do not attempt to change gear.' At this point I phoned the amazing MB Assistance, you get thirty years of it as long as you have the car serviced at a dealership, and in 45 minutes a man arrives with a laptop and re-installs the car's firmware but did say there was almost certainly a bad connection to a computer.
Two days later it happens to my wife in Edinburgh and they can't get her a hire car so they drive her to the theatre she was working in and tow the car home. The following morning a tow truck arrives to take the car away and deliver a brand new top of the range ML just to make you feel bad about all the toys you couldn't afford! I have it for 10 days (£1100 paid by MB) while they strip the interior completely, remove both wings bonnet and bumper to trace a water leak that had damaged a computer. The car was out of warranty and I was pleased that MB agreed to pay 75% of the bill leaving me only £700 to pay The cost of the failed bit of sealant? £4.00!!!
Oh, and today the central heating has lost pressure...

It's a regular thing here. I blame the plastic pipe and hand tighten fittings they use on a pressured system

Sounds like Mercedes and Saab have some similarities...
Dad has a 2006 9-3 TiD which decided to have a long-term electronic strop a couple of years ago. Basically it would decide that traction control was faulty then disable the accelerator and fix itself at 1500 rpm. Presumably this is for Americans who can't drive but have lawyers, as personally I'd have designed it to flash up "TCS Failure: Consult Dealer" and carry on normally without it, which would be a lot safer too.
Ended up spending about a month at the dealer being completely rewired due to a few pence worth of corroded wire!

I learnt never to use plastic fittings. Although they are easy to work with and resist freezing better, mice love them. And they eat the joint just until there is a pinhole leak. Which you don't notice for two years! I now only ever use copper!

I never knew that!
I know a couple of plumbers who won't use them but I always put it down to copper joints being cheaper and unlikely to develop a leak later on, plus it's easy to work with assuming you can solder.
You can still buy a new Lada Niva, someone is importing LHD ones for about £9k. I'd probably buy one if I had the money to hand, compared to the competition it's a bit of a bargain.

Yep, but given it was a Lada you could probably fix it with a hammer and a roll of wire... I won't go into the problems I had with my Trabant and Lada

This a very long thread!!
Had a Lada from new for around four years. The oil light kept coming on. I kept going back to the dealer who kept saying it the 'sender' which I think was a switch. About a month after the warranty ran out, the oil pump stopped. It basically needed a new engine and wasn't the same afterwards
I did then have a largely trouble free relationship with Renault for around 15 years
