I'm really shaken by what could potentially have happened. The dog and cat were in the house but are fine. The dog was found hiding in a cupboard and the cat under a bed.

Blimey Ken - glad you are ok - total dummy you are not !!
As a retired hotelier , I remember having to worry about up to 70 guests in my hotel per night , and staff in various states , and fire was one of my biggest betes noir.So easy to start and so difficult to stop.I later did fire training for the hotels I worked in as a Chef and because of the daily risks realised how easy it was to be casual and forget.......
Horrible smell though and shame about the door - but remember that things are replaceable.

WOW - that was nasty but thankfully not a lot worse .
Pity about the door - those doors are really rather nice .
Insurance folk can be very helpful - I recall the house along the road from us that went on fire on Hogmanay one year - the insurance had to pay for a wood panelled hall and stair case - it was a fantastic job once completed

Wood panelled hall and staircase? How many stately homes are in your road?

Hard luck Ken, or was it good luck with only minor damage.
Was it Edinburgh in the News, were the council has the power to force private house holders to maintain their building up to a standard. If they don't the council carries out the work and bills the owner.

I am so glad your animals were OK Ken. Hopefully they weren't too traumatised by the experience. They'll probably get over it faster than you!
I bet your glad you don't have another puppy yet aren't you?

I was not going to mention that.

Is that where Freda lives? and it has a Coach House
It's the last day of summer. Autumn begins tomorrow. I think summer went on it's holidays to Finland this year, it certainly didn't hang around the lowlands much.
To mark summer's demise I was tempted to fire up the bbq (it is dry and sunny today:shock but his nibs won't be home until late. So I have a big pan of chilli bubbling on the cooker instead. Maybe we'll manage that bbq at the weekend if the promised 21-24C arrives.

Because of the Global Warming we are only given samples of weather now, it's just unfortunate they seem to consist mainly of Autumn and Winter. It's a good enough reason to try out exotic dishes such as Cullen's Skink. How can something that sounds so revolting be so delicious.

Wow Ken! what a lucky escape. I'm glad the damage was minor, even if it involved the front door. It could have been so much worse.
Our over-the-road neighbours tumble drier caught fire a couple of years ago and it was only when we spotted smoke coming from their roof that we realised. They had put some clothes on to dry and then gone shopping for the afternoon.
They couldn't live in the house for three months whilst it was repaired and cleaned up. Sadly their cat also died after breathing in too much smoke. The fire brigade rescued the beastie but it died that night.
What was even worse was no one had the neighbours mobile number to call them - so they came home to a scene of devastation.
