I agree for 'normal' sales calls and I am polite to these callers. But the one I am talking about is a scam and to the uninitiated they get them to go to their computer, show them the Event Monitor and there will always be some red error entries - on everyone's computer. These can be ignored unless you do have a genuine problem. Once your hooked/frightened they get you to allow remote access and then the world is their oyster. Or they sell you an alleged virus killer via your credit card!!Having worked for 4 years on telesales ( frozen food company accounts )I am somewhat sympathetic, and as a gentleman I refuse to be overly rude ( I know all the words,I don`t have to use them ! ).My patience is sorely tried by the bucket shop, landbanking, sharedealing, fine wine,CO2 selling, accident recompense, double glazing, loft insulation,mis-sold payment protection scammers though..Tony
So...I am quite happy to lead scammers up the garden path! A few weeks ago I got annoyed with one and used a few choice words and she said she would now get into my computer, steal my bank details and raid my account!! Nice.
And as for TPS I have this but I think it only works for UK callers - not from India, Nigeria or other such places. So...beware!!
Cheers....rant over....John

Interesting - never had a "computer" scam like that - I`m a great fan of Norton/Symantec anyhow and between us we keep the darn thing working sweetly - I get more hassle from IE9 and the Microsoft "nanny" brigade than from outsiders.
Anyone who wants to steal my overdraft is more than welcome to try John.
PS since I started on this I have been called 3 times this afternoon - 1x CO2 offset trading,1x Fine Wine investment and 1x Land Banking - busy little day !!!
TPS and MOPS are for the UK but it doesn`t work

I suspect that if she could really do that, it isn't very likely that she would be working in a telesales job!she said she would now get into my computer, steal my bank details and raid my account!!
I've had a number (despite TPS registration etc) of calls from scam artists proffering IT assistance as there is a 'problem with the configuration of Windows' on my computer. Which doesn't run Windows. It always worth playing along and letting them work that out for themselves, though.

Thinking about it I did have one a couple of weeks ago. I knew it was a scam because she was speaking English from the get-go.
I said, in Dutch, it would be hard for me to have a problem since I didn't have a computer, and hung up.

I've had 3 computer has a problem calls this week - all from Offshore call centres so the TPS thing doesn't work
I'm now wicked - I let them talk and right as they think have have me hooked - I tell them to put the script down and listen , then I tell them I'm not using a Windows computer .
It's really quite funny being unable to find that Windows key

The last one of those I got I let them ramble on and then asked if it worked on Linux.
After a pause the line went dead.
I wonder why?

Years ago my Mum was being pestered by double glazing salesmen so one day when I was round there I answered the phone.
They asked if I'd like to have double glazing, oooh yes please I said and over the next 30 mins had agreed to ;-
8x double glazed windows
1x new front porch
2x french door at the rear
1x large conservatory
loft insulation
cavity wall insulation
and new guttering!
There was an excited voice on the end of the phone when he came to ask for an appointment and I said
'before I make the appointment, can I just ask, are you sure that the council is really going to pay for all of this?'
The line went dead and Mum was never pestered again!

Nice one, Unlocker.
The trouble is, some mugs do give these people business. If it didn't pay, these calls would stop.

I've been on both sides, called and caller, whilst working as a "financial adviser". It certainly changed my attitude to these calls, no slamming the phone down or abuse, rather like answering the door to Jehovahs Witnesses, Mormons etc. Believe me it is a thankless job and I'd hate to be in a position where it was the only "work" available as it is for many people now. Of course now I don't answer the telephone and rarely the door for the reason stated earlier. A polite No is as easy to say than as a tirade of abuse. Do you swear at the assistant in a store when approached? After all they are "Cold Calling" too.

How about what happens when you return mail to the sender (I do not require 20 cruises or more plants or contribute to all the begging letters that come to me.)
So do they get returned?

We've been getting plastic bags through the door begging for donations..
..but when you read the small print they're for a company, not a charity.
They make good rubbish sacks though.
Tonight it's a pizza, bottles of beer and wine and hopefully a good nights sleep.
