Me too.

Welcome back Tony! It sounds like you had a great holiday.
Ah now I know why you left the UK Gwyn, it was to avoid the shellfish sellers who frequent the pubs with trays full of cockles and mussles

Do they still do that? I have not seen one for ages. Mind you this afternoon was the first time I'd been in my local since December 2009.

Low energy lightbulbs are a joke. One of the two in my room just expired after much flickering and a loud buzz. Can't help thinking I had incandescent ones last longer...

They don't work very well and the light is cold. I prefer that warm tungsten glow, but then I suspect many people do.

What's interesting is that the low energy aspect is the thing of the moment, but the fact that they contain Mercury (for which our camera batteries were villified) is swept under the carpet.

A more holistic approach might be a good idea.

Thanks for the cooking tip Tony.

Low energy bulbs, I got some 2 years ago made by Philips. They had a life time guarantee, so when 2 died I went back to the store with them, only to be told I needed the original reciept!

Life time guarantees are useless when things like this happen, after all the bulbs have a production date on them and I'm sure their life should be longer than 2 years normal use!

I buy the cheapest I can find normally, four of which have outlasted these expensive failures.

I don't think that is strictly true, but you need to prove they were bought from that shop - or return them to Philips.

I changed 2x100W bulbs over my workbench for 2x of those bent eco bulbs
I've recently increased to 4off and I'm not sure that's enough

I've also noticed that in cold weather (my workshop is an unheated garage) that they are dimmer than ever.

Be aware that by 2012 ALL incandescent bulbs will have been phased out (source - Phase-Out.pdf - a document from Philips) and that includes cooker/fridge/freezer and other food preparation equipment

regards
Bernard

I can't understand why someone would ban light bulbs before banning heaters outdoors Some eat out pubs have massive outdoor tables with huge heaters underneath so the the diners don't feel too cold

I thought they were to keep the smokers happy now they can't smoke indoors.

I don't have a problem with light bulbs. I have gone over to LED bulbs as the others have needed replacing. You get those in warmer colours.

The new directives seem not to apply to "industrial" premises - so you can still buy the old bulbs for your "office" "shed" etc..............I`ve stocked up on 40,60,100 watt from ebay and have no intention of using the poisonous mercury filled dim lights.Apparently if they shatter they become "hazardous waste" and have to be disposed of "professionally".
As usual we are being led by the nose down the "planet saving" path by people who haven`t read through or thought through what they spout and are just making money out of we sad punters who allow it to happen.

Rant over

Hi Tony you seem to know the area. I'm off to St Mawes and Lynton soon, any recommendations for places to visit would be appreciated. Last time we stayed in Falmouth and toured south and west from there
