I do NOT believe it - English exam boards are at it again

One Board has admitted it's messed up the Maths exam today - some papers are correct , others are not .

Doesn't affect my elder grandson [ trying for Welbeck MOD 6th Form College and through to the final stages of that ] but his younger brother !! His School seem to be sitting this one early

Whilst hearing about that debacle another Exam board has just announced that it's messed up for another two subjects too.

How can they manage this - something is sadly wrong

But the big news is a guy from Ireland is better at hitting little balls into holes with sticks than some other people. He's a hero! And therefore British!

(Even though Northern Ireland isn't actually part of Great Britain!)
I think you are confused. Britain and Great Britain are not the same at all. Britain is the UK, which includes Northern Ireland, and the adjective for Britain is British. Anyone born in the UK has British nationality automatically. Great Britain is simply an island, nothing more. Eire, no doubt to the annoyance of its citizens, is part of the British Isles, and despite the name, the British Isles are not necessarily British.

Then of course there are the British Islands, which are part of the British Isles, and belong to the Crown, but are not part of the UK. Jersey, Guernsey, inter alia.

Clear?

Isn't that why we have the name United Kingdom, although its not very united at times

They've finished exams here, had their results and are done with school. At least until August/September when they start their next level of schooling, be that more at secondary school, at different levels of vocational training or at uni.

We all know that exams are getting easier anyway.

I'm not confused George. I think if you bothered to read you will find I said that Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain. What part of that confuses you?
I read that. Your comment implied that because Northern Ireland is not part of GB (which is too obvious to mention), a person from NI should not be considered British.

So, it appeared that you didn't know what Great Britain means, and that you didn't know Northern Ireland was part of Britain.

Hence my desire to help you out!

It's clear that the people setting exams are getting stupider.

Some time ago, a friend showed me his daughter's report card. A* in every subject (of which there were many, and none were knitting, media studies or other rubbish). And, he admitted, she wasn't unusually bright or diligent.

When everybody gets top marks, how do you know who is really intelligent?

I suspect he meant something similar to the Andy Murray phenomenon... when he loses, the English are soppused to refer to him as a Scottish tennis player implying he has nothing to do with us. When he wins, he's referred to as British, so we can embrace him as a national hero! Load of nonsense really but a bit of fun.

Er, the sun set on the Empire in the early 60s. The only colonies left are still there because the inhabitants fear what will happen if the Union flag is ever lowered.

But I know what you mean. And fear not about giving offence. There are too many professional offence-takers, and they belong in the same dank dungeon as the other people in your list.

Ahh, something I do know about!

I've been invigilating most GCSE and A or A/S level exams for a school since last month, and inevitably you have a quick flick through the paper in between making sure nobody's trying to pass notes and delivering tissues/pens/extra paper. My opinion is that they haven't necessarily got easier, but schools are now a lot better at teaching to the test.

There are exceptions - one paper known as "Living in a Digital World" would probably have netted anyone with some common sense and ability to read the questions a respectable grade. Despite masquerading as an IT exam it seemed more intended to mould the students into good little consumer drones who buy what they're told to on the internet and never do any of that naughty downloading stuff. There was no serious IT or computer science content, it was more like a copy of "Which?" magazine with a mark scheme!
