Can you open System Preferences/Network/Advanced/P{roxies and make sure everything is unchecked?

Seeing that compleyely out of context, I thought you were discussing the advantages of APSC cameras for wildlife shooting. If it's working with FF then it sounds as if Safari is being difficult.

Sounds like A DNS issue on Virgin which would be localised (but to what extent I don't know). The proxy is overriding the DNS.
Basically you're going to Virgin to find out where to find the web site - it should tell you the IP address but can't find it.
My best advice, leave it for now and see if it resolves itself.
(If nothing else works I would suggest replacing your kitchen. It won't help but will take your mind off things!)

Hmm. Can you download Shiira and see if that works? It's another Webkit-based broswer (same as Safari) so it would help to rule out a Webkit problem.

The only thing I can suggest is a good stiff drink, stick with FF for here and have another good stiff drink...
... but you all know I like beer, gin, beer, whisky and, what was it?

well - I've solved it but I'm not sure why everything decided to be nasty with me
One of my add-ons , extensions is the problem , but which of the three I don't know - elimination can take place another time.
I've a blasted firmware update to do and these are things I prefer to do with someone watching over my shoulder - and of course that's no longer possible
Since I don't need to use SDXC cards at present it can wait for a bit .
Some alcohol will be consumed tonight

Hmm. If I get asked to take pictures at a company gathering, does that make me a professional 'tog?
going to leave the k10 in a corner somewhere on a tripod attached to a laptop and running an intervalometer. Should be able to leave it for setup and breakdown, too
The k5 is coming for pic duties and teh 7D for video. Time to go order some parts, methinks...

Depends on whether you're getting paid extra I guess!
I did manage to get a couple of photos published in a lifestyle magazine recently via a slightly roundabout route (no, I didn't get paid or credited unfortunately). Ages ago I was asked by my old secondary school (where my Mum works) if I could get some shots of their production of "Return to the Forbidden Planet", as apparently the trained professional photographer related to one of the staff had produced pretty rough results (despite being qualified to teach others to use a camera...). I turned up with the K-m and 120mm f2.8 and took loads of shots from the back of the hall, then put the best ones on a USB stick and sent them in. A month or so ago two or three of them turned up in an advert for the school!
I might also get a couple into Land Rover Owner after a friend's Defender was selected as a feature vehicle. I took a handful of shots of it during a greenlaning trip and was asked for copies, this time I did manage to include the request that they credit me as the source if they decide to use them.

If it's working with FF then it sounds as if Safari is being difficult.
