silly question: when prepping metal for paint, what grade wet & dry to use? it's the base of the lamp and it was obviously too well done (I think it was 800?) because at one point I was going to polish. Then it turned out it is stainless and alu, so polishing won't look right.
It's intended to be high-gloss blue (2 coats primer, 3-4 blue, 3-4 gloss lacquer). So I think 180 should be enough....
The third coat of blue crazed after I'd sanded some of the imperfections out. Then it turns out I can simply scrape the paint off with my fingernail. OK; time to re-do.

I can only comment from the perspective of having resprayed some alloy wheels (the paint is still attached after two years and a fair bit of mud, so I must have got it right). I used fairly coarse paper to smooth the surface and rough up the original paint, then a guide coat of primer to check the finish followed by more sanding, more primer, and finally the top coat. After that and the silver rim paint were applied (body coloured centres with silver rims) I gave the whole thing a couple of good coats of clear lacquer and left it to dry for a day or two before refitting.

well, right now it's drying again - I'll put some primer again on it tomorrow and let it sit overnight before I retry first coats of blue. Pain in the timetable.... but hey, that's the way things go.

I've got a load of aluminium bodywork to sort out this summer - want to deal with all the flaky bits before they get worse, and there are a couple of distressing pitted areas in the back door (lurking below the handle).

The wheels went ok, and those are presumably aluminium alloy so I'm hopeful. I've got a rotary wire brush to clean the corrosion off with and get a good key, then I'll get a coat of primer on before it gets a chance to corrode again. Only snag is that I need a dry week or two to make sure I don't have excess moisture about, especially when I come to sort out a dodgy corner on one door skin (wire brush, prime to see what needs doing, fill, prime). aluminium is fun, isn't it?
Bret
I'll be putting chequerplate along the lower bodysides afterwards, so the finish isn't that important. I regard it as training for the other bits which will be visible!

There's a faint echo of blue cameras at the moment.
I missed the Tom Petty evening, might catch it on i-player if I get the chance, was it good Gwyn?

It is more like autumn here today - very wet and windy but at all cold at 11C. Our long term forecast has more of the same for the next two weeks too.

Well the state of republican 'tea party' politics and the right wing media (notably Fox) has brought about exactly the sort of disaster commentators have been predicting tonight. You instil that much fear and hatred in the populace, combine it with liberal gun laws, and this is what can happen. The congresswoman who was shot through the head (through the brain) is thankfully still alive. At least 5 other bystanders were not so lucky.
