Another pointless thread

Unless these masks are air tight I don't see how the can be of use. There was a gentleman giving evidence to the select committee on Corvid-19 the other day. He was trying to convey the size of a virus, he used the analogy that if a hippo was a bacteria the oxpeckers on its back were the virus.

Basically, the only mask worth wearing needs to be a FFP3 mask: https://www.rdash.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Appendix-47-Surgical-Face-Ma...

Toolstation and Screwfix etc. soon sold out of these. I bought a single FFP3 mask from Toolstation a couple of weeks back before travelling south.

The only reason they had it in stock was price, it was way more expensive than the FFP3 paper versions but this does have replaceable filters.

Mrs K10D commented that I'll look the part at a Whitby Goth Fest.

It's the aerosol stopping capability as per the NHS link that makes it worth using.

By the way Barrie, this thread has suddenly left it's title.

I think we have to make allowance for the Stir Crazy due to lockdown

Frustrated today. There is a dolphin in our harbour, a proper dolphin, not a harbour porpoise, but we aren't allowed out to see it.
No doubt some idiots will and some will come from a long way since it made the national news, but we will be good.

What's the porpoise of life?

87 deaths today in the UK.

A fact of life Peter.

So as a forum, we can be drawn into the current situation and end up with this thread doing what the MSM is doing 24/7 or should we change direction and see who comes up with the good suggestions of how to shoot what's around our homes or gardens? For my two pence worth, I'll endeavour to see how bad I can get my macro skills laughed at.

I spy with my macro eye????

Well it’s better than the US initiative to persuade garment manufacturers to make masks, it turns out they are using standard fabrics which are useless for blocking viruses so hospitals won’t use them.
Or to put it another way, those masks are made of totally pointless thread.

I found a box of FFP3 moulded face masks in the garage earlier today, sealed and ready to go.

Let the bidding begin

Actually might have a go and use them if I need to pop out, but even then they're less effective with facial hair so maybe there's no point. Ultimately I've been avoiding any trips out for a while now, even when the shopping rush was going on. I can survive on water and Lindt 90% Dark Chocolate

No...it is a figure that is within our power to influence if we take it seriously.

I mention the number of deaths here in the UK because it is within the power of us all to affect the final outcome, by either reducing it or increasing it. Estimates of deaths without any action are 500,000 in the UK. With adherence to health officials advice there is a chance we can keep deaths to below 20,000.

You seem to want to play down the seriousness of this by comparing it to the flu or other pandemics. Most of us have some general immunity to flu and because it is a well understood viral variant it is easy to produce a new vaccine each year to protect the vulnerable. Flu does not cause the serious symptoms that Covid-19 does to the general population.

Most importantly, because it is a new variant of the Coronavirus family, no-one on the planet has immunity. And a vaccine is many many months away. There is no treatment.

In Italy thankfully the infection and death rate have fallen in the last two days but still 600 deaths today alone. We can only pray that the "lockdown" there is working, and that if enough people here follow the advice being given, we too can cope with this.

I for one do not wish to stick my head in the sand and pretend that the greatest health crisis for decades does not exist.

Just like people who buy from the "someone" who knocked on the door a few hours ago to try to sell us some "masks" - was "politely" (Yes, politely!) told to "go away"!
K-3 II, K-3 and a K-70 from SRS (having now relegated the K-30 /"K-50" to a backup body), & some Sigma and Pentax lenses (and a lot of old 35mm gear!)

If I had any of the right sort of masks lying around twiddling their thumbs I would give them to my son's girlfriend who is at the coalface fighting this. Putting in double shifts, unable to return to her home or see my son, she, and her colleagues around the world, need all the protection they can get.

Now please can someone lighten the mood?? I come here for a bit of escapism, not more doom and gloom.

Not sure if this counts as lightening the mood, but here goes...

I demolished my shed last week with the help of a friend (just in time!). The most enjoyable few hours I've spent for a long time. Thoroughly recommended to raise the spirits and forget doom and gloom. So pick up those sledgehammers, folks, and find something to destroy - it's FUN!!!!

Found a couple of very dead, very big and very desiccated rats under the shed, a reminder of the days when neighbours kept chickens in messy conditions and the rest of us tried to kill the rats they attracted. It explains why the dog was so interested in the bottom of the shed!!

Steve
PS: Next week, weather permitting, the shed will become a huge bonfire with an effigy of a coronavirus on top. Another chance to forget doom and gloom - unless the neighbour's fence joins in the fun...

Just make sure you don't do what I did last year.

I trusted my relatives to stack the timber in a nice pile. Instead they left a few pieces on the concrete behind where I was working. I stepped back onto one of these and a rusty screw went into my foot

We've locked ourselves down totally and our Grandson Finn ended up being here with us. He's 8 and very active, so we've been doing schooling with him for several hours a day. Sue covered Maths and a bit of writing practice and I covered Science. We started off with discussing the Solar System and got as far as Jupiter. Tomorrow the Outer Planets are the scheduled subject.

Meanwhile, his Mum is on the front line and his sisters are holding fort to help out Dad who is still working. No time to be too glum really.
Best regards, John
