Photographing street lighting
Wha-hey! My field of expertise. I am a lighting engineer and am currently the Chairman of the Scottish Region of the Institution of Lighting Professionals (formerly Institution of Lighting Engineers). I currently work as the street lighting engineer for a local authority. As far as photographing ...

I LIKE Snootchies Pentax Artist stuff
Having a science background should be an advantage in any artistic field of endeavour. In photography, for example, an understanding of the physics of light, lenses and the camera sensor, should benefit the production of images that are good in their material quality. But, of course, it must be more...

SRS Open Day - Saturday 3rd November
I'm rather glad I can't make this open day either. I suspect the 560mm would need rather a lot of cleaning after I'd extracted it from where I'm sure my wife would shove it.

Our Great Photo Processing Shootout!
I'm afraid there is no way that any RAW image (which is not even a photograph really!), can somehow be considered in any way 'pure' or a natural rendering of a scene. It is just a data record of everything the sensor could detect - every detail, colour tone and brightness value - even if none of the...

Our Great Photo Processing Shootout!
Theres my point John - it looks better to you! Personally I prefer David's original version - Wait a sec - there's no such thing as an 'original version'. There's a RAW file (which only David & I have) and two photos generated from that RAW file. The RAW file is just a collection of camera data (li...

Our Great Photo Processing Shootout!
I have been trying to sell the idea that if possible we should strive to make as many global & finer adjustments purely with the RAW data . . .. Lightroom is a different concept. I hope to be able to put it to a test very soon! If I have correctly interpreted what you have written, you have a sl...

old lens on new camera ?
SnoozeMoose - I was talking about using an olympus DSLR body - I was hoping, and sounds like it is the case, that this issue will go away with the Pentax Body. On the Focus/DoF issue, I think that you need to go back to the circle (sphere) of confusion (or do we have enough confusion?) and accept...

old lens on new camera ?
I assume you're right Greg - I wouldn't know becuase it's 10x easier to focus/recompose than move the AF point using the arrow buttons. Another point to bear in mind is that the AF sensor picks up a larger area than the red dot you see on the screen, leading to false focus confirmation. This hap...

Billingham Hadley Large/Pro
No problem, glad to help. Just to explain if anyone wondered: The reason I store the camera lens down is partly to let any dust fall out of rather than into the shutter/sensor area. Also it makes access faster. The superflex insert is necessary as it stops the weight of the camera plus lens resti...

Billingham Hadley Large/Pro
On a more serious note, when I was looking for a larger camera bag recently I had a look at some of the Billingham bags in a local camera shop. Nice, but exensive. Really expensive. I ended up getting a which seems very similar to the Billinghams and their ilk for a very small fraction of the p...

Billingham Hadley Large/Pro
Had the dividers today and (almost) filled the bag up. I know John has often recommended the Hadley Pro/Large, but I'm amazed how much kit can fit into such a small seeming bag. Just thought it might be useful for anyone else considering one of these what I would manage to get in, comfortably. ...

The Meaning Of Moire
Its great fun Andrew! All the other Pentax DSLRs (and indeed most others) have what is called an anti-aliasing (AA) filter in front of the sensor. The K5IIs doesn't. The AA filter removes interfence patterns such as AndrewK's link shows. So if there is a fine repeating pattern that you are trying...

The Meaning Of Moire
As an aside, if you blur your eyes on the moire generator, the effect lessens. This is very similar to what the AA sensor on the camera does!

wireless cable release for long exposures?
I did buy a cheap one from Ebay ages ago but it doesn't keep the shutter open in bulb mode, another problem is that it has quite a narrow range so it won't work unless I'm stood in front of the - does anyone know if the SRS ones operate from behind ? I think whether the IR remote can reliably be us...

wireless cable release for long exposures?
I have a very cheap IR remote bought off ebay and it works perfectly for long exposures in bulb mode with both K-x and K-5 (K-x only has a sensor on the back, K-5 has one front and back). You just need to ensure you have the menu option 'Remote in Bulb Mode' set to one press open and one press cl...

Wide Angle Lens Advice
I've had the Samyang 14mm a couple of months now, and as I've reported here before am very pleased indeed. Check out the previous posts and examples : Distortion keeps getting referred to. On the test charts I saw before buying it is limited to the outer reaches, and after all for now w...

How sensitive is your camera?
This possibly due to light transmission through the different lenses rather than any body or sensor issues... Good point, but if I put my K to Q adapter on the Q and use the same lens on both cameras I get exactly the same result, pretty sure it's differences in the sensors, it's the only thing I ca...
