Photokina 2012

Absolutely. Nikon reckon that is a game changer. It will appeal to so many advanced amateurs. Let's hope Pentax are next in line for that sensor and the Kwhatever can trump it as the K5 trumped the D700. I would be certainly tempted with something like that and I would like Pentax to provide it....

Testing a new camera and lens - what to look for?

Set the it to F22 with Flash ON, and take a picture of a blank white wall, to check if the sensor is clean/un-scratched

Kit 18-55 > F/16, soft?

There may be sample variation in any lens batch, but we should expect that all the Pentax lenses will deliver good images. Our kit lenses (we have had five of these so far) have all been very consistent as it happens and have all produced pleasing results. They have been best at about f11, which is ...

Kit 18-55 > F/16, soft?

Diffraction is the issue at smaller apertures. Light 'spreads' a little when it goes around an edge. The smaller the aperture the more significant this effect. Because this is an issue related to actual rather than relative aperture, it becomes more significant with smaller sensor cameras, as the ab...

Help / Advice needed

Hi Wes (and welcome) - It may just be a bit of dust on the sensor. If you have the instruction book take a look at the section for sensor cleaning, but take care that you follow the advice properly. Usually locking the mirror up and gently blowing with a "Rocket" type blower is sufficient. You shoul...

Thanks for the response......I initially thought it may be a bit of dust but it is absolutely symmetrical, it resembles one of the 'check' boxes on ebay for example, where you click to accept something and a black dot appears inside a circle, although my problem is more of a pale grey rather than de...

As the rest of the sensor looks ok this is obviously something that the cameras dust removal can't shift, and as it's been there so long it's doubtful a rocket blower will help, you need to invest in some wet cleaners. I doubt it's a fault with the sensor, the halo effect is a characteristic of d...

Although Jessops may stock these, they will advise you to get it cleaned 'professionally' (which basically means they do it for you and charge £40)! You need something like . Visible Dust are a very good brand. You might get cheaper, but don't buy too cheap as it may damage your sensor more th...

how to store camera and lenses

Camera and lenses live in my Lowepro bag ready to go. In a room not a cupboard. I take out anything I won't need such as flashgun when I leave the house. I use the integral rain cover on the bag if wet out and check all gear on return if slightest hint of damp. My lenses get plenty of use but...

Lightning trigger

I know someone who owns one of these and says they work great! http://www.lightningtrigger.com/ They are a bit pricey, but apparently it is more than a light sensor. It is also supposed to work on the change in charge in the air before the strike happens as well as the light. Although I am f...

Lens Ratio

Hello all Why when reviewing a lens,do they state a 300mm, say on a k-r is equal to 450mm on a full frame camera. Does this mean if i go out with my made up friend who has a pentax full frame camera? and i have my k-r with a 300mm lens and we take the same shot at the same distance, does he need a...

Lens Ratio

Dave, I think you are more or less right. As far as I know (and I could well be wrong), I think the logic is: The focal length of the lens is not related to the size of the sensor. However, 35mm format is generally used as the baseline against which everything else is measured hence things tend to ...

Film is also easier to focus on because the light-sensitive layer is thicker than the surface of an electronic sensor. Plus film is not as sharp as digital and peeping at very fine detail (at least at 35mm) was far less common, because it was harder to do (loupe or large print). So slight focusi...

I agree with much of the above. Contax used a vacuum pressure plate supposedly to minimise film flatness issues. The LX has a longer pressure plate than most Pentax cameras (and longer film guides). I had a 20x30 inch poster from Kodachrome 25 printed. The detail was amazing but showed up limitat...

I'd never heard about all this messing with per lens settings until internet forums started on it. I still say if you buy a lens and its wonky send it back. if it's an old one then fair enough BUT then surely you rely on manual focus. Just becuase you enver heard of it doesn't mean it's a real issu...

Yes, I am English, and this is where I am coming from as far as photography is concerned; "A photograph or photo is an image created by light falling on a light-sensitive surface, usually photographic film or an electronic imager such as a CCD or a CMOS chip. Most photographs are created using a cam...

As for "improving" the photo by means of PS or whatever, you are saying that the image produced by the sensor in the camera is crap. Yet you also say that the image quality of the said sensor is excellent, so why does it need to be improved? I understand the need for this software in the early days...
