Sensor sweet spot

f4 to 5.6 gives the highest resolution in my experience with my glass as well.

Sensor sweet spot

Is it possible that those that experience the best sharpness with the lens only slightly stopped down are misinterpreting their results? Clearly, diffraction isn't going to be contributing significantly to any erosion in image quality from F5.6, say, to F11 or more. Depth of field, and indeed ...

Sensor sweet spot

Hi Chris, I'm not sure you are correct in your post above about sharpness at wider apertures being down to shorter exposures / less shake. I am basing my experiences when images are taken on a tripod with 2 second delay or on remote control with delay, so shake is not a factor. I can't send you ...

Sensor sweet spot

In theory, a lens is sharpest wide open, but we know that isn't true. That is because we don't have "perfect" lenses. In practice, stopping down two stops often gives best results, but modern zooms can actually keep on improving right down to f16. The better the lens, the more likely it will be t...

Is it possible that those that experience the best sharpness with the lens only slightly stopped down are misinterpreting their results? ...... Therefore, it seems likely to me that those reporting the best sharpness with lenses only slightly stopped down, are probably getting the benefit of...

Sensor sweet spot

Did all my tests on a tripod. Why would anyone test their lenses handheld. It doesn't make sense as you're introducing obvious and significant veriables. Fair enough... interesting results then.

Most sensible DSLR option?

Blimey David, that was a super-rapid response! The dust ingress is partly my fault - I changed lenses outside a couple of times, but I did purchase a sensor cleaning kit which I have used once. The results were excellent. However, my K100D definitely lets dust into the body without removing the le...

Most sensible DSLR option?

Hi, I have a KR. I have the sensor shake at power up turned on and regularly use the test facility to check for sensor dust which I remove with a hurricne blower with the camera body pointing downwards (full charge on battery important for this and of course DO NOT touch the sensor itself) I f...

K200D IR conversion?

Hello, I am interestedi in converting my K200d to dedicated IR camera. That would include removing the hot filter from the sensor and replacing it with a IR pass filter, such as IR720. Since I can't get it done here in Slovenia, where I come from, I started wondering if I could order a kit somewh...

K-mount unit for Ricoh GXR

Is this a viable possibility or does the distance required between sensor and lens make a K unit too large for the GXR body? If it is viable, I guess that a K unit will be produced in the not-too-distant given the recent takeover. Or is this assumption wrong?

Still in the frame...

I agree, gents. Perhaps, as well as manufacturing cameras, Ricoh Pentax can work on developing image sensors capable of being built in to smartphones, if not actually launch a range of smartphones themselves. Think of the publicity RP would get if the likes of Nokia, Samsung, HTC, Blackberry, or eve...

Dark Images with manual lenses.

Thank you very much, photos are now brighter but I agree a slight adjustment of shutter speed makes things even better. I cannot find that info on the green button in the manual, thanks for the information. Now I just need to find out where all the dirt is that makes my viewfinder view look like...

Quick question on DoF & APS-C v 135 framing

I've done lots of searching and read lots of forums on depth of field comparisons between APS-C & 135 sized sensors. Depending on the terminology used and abstracting viewing distance & circle of confusion (itself confusing to many), is the following correct (assuming a mythical Pentax 16MP 135 fram...

Quick question on DoF & APS-C v 135 framing

It's best not to get too complex and confused with this, but basically whatever is behind a lens (film, sensor, any size) that does not change the characteristics of the lens. A 50mm lens will always be a 50mm lens and have the DOF of a 50mm lens. However, on 135 format 50mm is a standard lens. O...

Quick question on DoF & APS-C v 135 framing

If I framed a shot with my M135/3.5 at 4m distance with the mythical 16MP 135 frame camera, and then my K-5 (same aperture) from 6m (to get the same framing), I'd end up with the same 'apparent' depth of field? No As John Points out your 135mm lens is still a 135mm lens and will give the same DoF o...
