Some thoughts on Hoods
Hi Kim George put me right on this a while back. You have to go back to school and try to remember your geometry (or was it physics). The angle of view of any lens will never change, it is a constant from the focal point of the lens out to infinity or back to the film plane. What happens on th...

Some thoughts on Hoods
If the laws of optics made our heads hurt before, add digital and we must be in migraine territory! The 18-35 was designed to cover the field of view of the 35mm frame, so the hood must be designed for that. The digital sensor uses only the centre of that view, so we should be able to use a sligh...

Some thoughts on Hoods
Hi Kim, I reread your post and now understand what your trying to say. If I'm right this time your actually proposing to reduce the the image (light) that reach's the sensor (film plane) buy using a tighter hood, which in effect narrows the field of view to match the senor dimensions, instead of ...

Battery contact cleaner
Hi Kimbo, You can get one of these at any good model shop. They are normally called a fibreglass burnishing brush. You can also get larger and smaller versions and I have seen other refils such as brass and even steel. They are very good at cleaning metals and act like very fine emery paper but fo...

Warehouse Express – Comments?
There isn’t a focus limit as such, but it has a focus clamp. The instruction which came with the lens have not been updated for the newer DFA lenses so I’m not sure if what I’m doing is ‘correct’. 1. The Focus Clamp effectively stops the AF system and the lens focus stays fixed. But you do appear...

Close up Quality
I have to agree with Matt that these results probably reflect differences in the degree of sharpening applied in-camera rather than differences in the resolving power of the lens/sensor combinations. I would be flabbergasted if the 750Z with its tiny sensor and cheap lens could outperform a D or ...

Beginning of the end for 35mm?
You would get good prices for many of thise lenses, as demand is strong for unusual manual focus lenses. When you move to a DSLR the small sensor will mean that the lenses will act as though they were 1.5x their marked focal lengths. This is because you are only using the centrel 22x15mm of their...

I am fed up with everyone telling me digital is convenient !
Convenience depends on what you are trying to do. I use Photoshop primarily as a digital version of my darkroom, which is still up and running by the way. However, when I sit down at the computer I have avoided having to mix chemicals, spend a session long enough to make it worthwhile and then the d...

The Bare Bones
Early days (pre teens) I was happy with my Zenith B and standard 50. I went via Praktica BCA & BC1 to a Chinon CP7m with 35-70 when I started earning and used that combo for about 10 years (now on long term loan to my Dad and still going strong) Now in the digital age and more in to my photog...

ND Filters
Old grape juice is wine. Old wine is cognac. vinegar is soured wine. as human beings, only our attitudes and outlook on life, diferentiate the cognacs from the vinegars. Neutral density filters are like sunglasses for lens. they allow you to use wider apertures with slower shutterspeeds in any ...

ND Filters
Paul you need good light though. Some even talk about 20-30 seconds at f8 or f5.6 ISO 1600 so take your tripod with you. Some companies are able to remove the filter infront of the sensor and replace it with one that doesn't cut infra red light or replace it even with an infra red filter so you ...

Lenses for an SFX-N
All K mount lenses will fit on your camera and work to some extent. The oldest (SMC, SMC M) will work in manual and aperture priority mode, manual focus SMC A will work in all exposure modes, manual focus SMC F & FA and FA D will work in all modes, manual and autofocus SMC FA J don't...

Macro shots
Hi Mannesty, I have no idea how to work out the numbers.. (I'll have to go and google it now) but if the coin is about the same size as our penny, and the image is uncropped, then it's something like 26mm width on the sensor, 5mm width on the coin; magnification of 5:1.. ish???? Cheers Liam

I will be putting the following onto e-bay shortly, I'll post a link up when I've done it: A nice little 35mm SLR starter kit with everything you need to get shooting! Camera: Pentax SF7 35mm SLR camera – good condition (for info on this camera see manual here: http://www.pentaximaging.c...

Another less than stellar review for Pentax
I got my latest (march 06)issue of Popular Photography and there was a review.... I can't believe that Pentax got lower "Ease of use" score than Canon. Because of "Swtch dst msr pt". People who want simplicity use the green mode not the menus! I used both the canon reb xt ...

6x7 forced to stop being made.
Just to clarify a little: The ROHS (Reduction of Hazardous Materials) directive has been known about for years. It comes into force July 1st 2006, and many manufacturers have been leaving things to the last minute, especially in the electronics industry for reasons I'll outline. It involves many ot...

New pentax models

New pentax models
the CCD has a much higher noise level than a full frame Canon 35mm sized chip. I believe the Canon uses a CMOS sensor, which I think is substantially different to a CCD. This might account for the difference in 'noise' performance between the two systems. Given the noise issues with the Sony 6.1 ...

New pentax models
Yes indeed, Canon do use CMOS sensors in the DSLRs. Considering that the pixels are physically much larger in the mamiya ZD chip, it's not very good that noise is such an issue. If anything, the noise levels should be considerably lower. Hopefully, the Pentax 645D will benefit from Pentax's no...

New pentax models
The *ist D2 (not it's real name, thankfully) will have an APS-C sized sensor. It is ridiculous to even contemplate Pentax bringing out any K-mount DSLR with a sensor size that is not APS-C, or fairly close to it. The fact that substantially greater pixel densities are now possible than were im...
