My Favourite Pentax
My first SLR was a Pentax Super A; I liked it, although I didn't keep it for long (maybe because it relied on batteries). My second Pentax was a MX, which I simply adored. Its compact size just felt right in my hands. Simple to use, and fully mechanical. My current 35mm Pentax is a LX. This is th...

Focusing Screen
Hi, I have one of the screens and I certainly think it is a huge improvement and worth every penny. I went straight back and bought another for my second LX. Regards Kim

Explanation please
It is a Japanese word which came into common use in the West a couple of years ago. It refers to the way in which the lens renders the out-of-focus parts of the image, particularly the highlights. Pentax people tend to consider that many Pentax lenses exhibit especially good bokeh. It is somethin...

which lens to buy?
Hi, I used to have a Pentax FA 28-70 f4 AL and 80-320 which I used with a Z-70 and later an MZ-3. The 28-70 was a great lens for its size, though a little slow. I wasn't overly impressed with the 80-320; it was slow, noisy and a little soft though its range was good. When I sold the Z70 I rep...

extension tubes
Hi all, I have recently acquired a set of extension tubes as I would like to do more macro photography as I don't have the time to do wildlife and landscape photography any more (Try taking a good photograph whilst trying to stop your 2 year old with a magnetic attraction to all things water rela...

extension tubes
Extension tubes have the advantage that they do not interfere with the optical construction of the lens, so do not reduce quality in themselves. You are increasing the distance of the lens elements from the film plane, which is what you do when you focus any conventional lens closer (forget inter...

extension tubes
Just to add to John's excellent reply... If you use a short focal length lens, you have to get physically closer (you will not get vignetting). If the focal length is too wide and/or the extension tubes too long you can find the focus point is actually inside the lens - and you won't be able to f...

extension tubes
Once you get hooked, you'll probably want to get a dedicated macro lens. The good news is that just about all prime macro lenses (even Sigma!) are very good. The Pentax ones are all superb, and the Tamron 2.5 90 is very highly regarded. Ignore macro zooms. Sharpness is paramount. Longer mac...

Fuji Velvia 50 ASA
I just got computerised and am searching the 'net' for photo sites;found an American one where in the Forum was discussion on the fact that Fuji ARE DISCONTINUING VELVIA 50 ASA! That will upset the well-known 'names' using Pentax 6x7 and Velvia such as Lee Frost! Is it TRUE members? Maybe there wi...

Radio-active Pentax lenses!
I was getting some info from 'the web' now I have the wonderful COMPUTER about Kodak Aero-Ektar lens 178mm f 2.5 and typed in 'Kodak Aero-Ektar Lens' into 'Google'and pages came up with some disturbing discussions about radio-active emissions from Ektars including some 'early Pentax Takumars'such as...

Radio-active Pentax lenses!
Hi, The lenses you are refering to used an element with thoriated glass. It generally only affected the Super Multi Coated versions and some of the SMC ones. The glass was used to cut down on dispersion and distortion. Thoriated glass has a very high refractive index which means a thinner lens elem...

Camara Fairs
Hi all I've had some luck, here's a link to a camera fair listing: http://www.rolleicamera.com/protected_whatson.htm I went to the Stroud fair on sunday. It was a lot smaller than previous fairs have been, to the point where it was held in the small back room rather than one part of the main...

Prime lenses
All the more recent Pentax primes have been high-tech, professional pieces of glass at hugh prices. What about the 500mm f4.5 SMC Pentax-M? Maybe you could find one second hand at a more realistic cost. I know it's manual focus, but if that's not an issue it might be worth a search.

Some thoughts on Hoods
Hi, A recent thread on hoods started me thinking about something new. Now I know a 50mm "std" lens has an apparent focal length of 50mm and this doesn't alter regardless of which camera it is used on. According to the Pentax literature, it has a field of view of 47 degrees. This is assuming you ...

Some thoughts on Hoods
Hi Kim George put me right on this a while back. You have to go back to school and try to remember your geometry (or was it physics). The angle of view of any lens will never change, it is a constant from the focal point of the lens out to infinity or back to the film plane. What happens on th...

I have just got a PENTAX ME SUPPER
The ME Supper is a lonely meal, best accompanied by a good white Burgundy, and taken on the knee in a comfortable chair in front of the television. However, if you are referring to the ME Super camera, then the first thing to do is to download the manual from here: http://www.pentaximaging.com...

Warehouse Express – Comments?
Dave - I'd appreciate any comments on the 100mm D-FA. I have the SMC-F which is a beautiful lens, but soooo heavy. The only thing I see that isn't on the D-FA is the focus limit... so do you ever get the lens hunting from macro to infinity and back? (I'm considering changing to the lighter more comp...
