Where were you, Pentax?

Sue and I have just come back from the NEC Focus on Imaging show. We would have liked to handle the *istD ans negotiate a price but Pentax were nowhere to be seen. This was a huge show - why weren't you there? Personally, I think this was a big mistake. You need to be seen to make the running...

Where were you, Pentax?

John I also went to Focus today and looked for a Pentax stand. I too was disappointed. They ought to have been there for their current users and potential new customers. We can only assume that they could not afford the expenditure, in the current climate. Lets hope that the rumoured lower price...

Pentax PF-65? Spotting Scope

Pentax currently offers the PF80 and PF 100 spotting scopes (80mm and 100mm aperatures respectively). As a birder, I would sure like to see a lighter, more compact version that still accepts 1 1/4 inch astronomical eyepieces. The recent release of 65mm scopes by Swarovski and Zeiss (not to mention...

Why is Nikon considered the standard?

It goes back a lot further than that. In the Korean war supplies of the new (to the West) Nikon and Canon rangefinder cameras started to find their way into the hands of the press photographers of the day, and they were staggered at the (especially Nikon) lens quality. The Japanese lenses were very ...

Centon 500mm Mirror Lens

I also have one that I got from Jessops second hand for £49. At this price, you can't criticise it too much, but I would agree that they are not brilliant. One thing to note; the ND or plain filters screwed in the back are part of the optical train - if you remove them, or don't put them in, then th...

Flying - Emergency Help Needed!

When you add a layer mask to the top layer you can use the paint brush set to black and paint on the layer mask. It won't cover it with black but will instead "erase" the top layer or reveal the layer under it. Painting back over it with white will bring back the top layer. Just make sure that when...

Better pictures

There are ways to print slide on paper, but the results, although they can be good, are often disappointing, and usually more expensive. I think what JR was suggesting was that you use slide to experiment with. Negative film is always subject to lab interference at the printing stage, so you can...

Bokeh anyone

He wanted comments on the bokeh - the out-of-focus highlights. Personally, I don't like it. It's very distracting; my first impression on viewing the picture was "what's that?". I'm amazed it's from a standard Pentax lens. I haven't seen such a pronounced effect before except from mirror lenses....

Close-ups

The extension tube goes between the camera body and the lens - the more you extend the tube the closer you will be able to focus. You can focus and compose your picture through the viewfinder in the normal way. Exposure can also be relied upon.

shooting a play in b+w

Hi, Many years ago, I used to be involved in theatrical lighting for amateur productions. As part of that I used to produce photos for the cast. I tended to avoid flash. It's OK for getting posed shots when you are reasonably close but even then you need a powerful gun, at least guide number 40 at ...

close up work

Close up lenses (filters) are cheap and cheerful, need no exposure increase but do need the lens to be well stopped down for best results. Macro lenses are expensive but excellent and offer the flat field necessary for close ups of flat subjects such as documents. Extension tubes need an incre...

close up work

A macro converter is typically a 2x converter that doubles the focal length of a lens, so it has perhaps up to 7 elements on its construction. As it magnifies the image it will also magnify abberations in the main lens, as well as having defects of its own. However, as the minimum focus distance rem...

close up work

Hi, I would agree with everything John has said. If you are on a budget and want to play with macro, I would avoid the macro converters. You haven't said which camera you are using. If you are using one of the "crippled" mount AF bodies, you may well be very limited. If not, I would go the way of e...

Pentax discontinuing 35mm SLR?

Hi, I am only guessing here, but I would like to think this is dealer talk rather than Pentax. Pentax no doubt will respond to market forces and now that DSLRs are more reasonable (I can remember not long ago when they were few a far between and about £3k) they may consider dropping a flagship film...

Pentax discontinuing 35mm SLR?

Confirmed today Pentax have no MZs or 50 f1.7 left in their Belgian Warehouse. They have some 50 f1.4s left, bit dont hold out any hope of them making any more, or indeed other quality lenses for film THIS IS THE END I guess the 35mm *ist will have greater stocks, but no doubt that the fut...

Pentax discontinuing 35mm SLR?

Maybe they will cut back massively on 35mm film bodies, but Pentax makes great medium format film equipment (Nikon & Canon do not). If Pentax wants to drop making 35mm film lenses, that would be silly, but there will be little impact for us. Along with Pentax, I've found great results from the T...

Lens compatibility with MZ5

Hi, I tried various metering methods including Zone etc. In the end I have found the best method is to use a "proper" lightmeter, preferably using an incident reading. I now use a Gossen Sixtimat and have never looked back. Fantastic on the ground and essential in the air. Regards Kim

Tripods

No problem :) Wakehurst is massive, and it can accommodate a huge number of people... as long as you don't expect to get into the restaurant ;) It might be worth giving Nymans a ring to make sure the bluebells are still out in force - they keep an updated blackboard of what's in bloom :) Ha...
