Pentax is so slow... is this normal..??
I own a Pentax 550. I am having a lot of trouble taking photos. Mostly, because it takes so long for the camera to focus and snap the shot. It is such a long delay. Is this normal? I am seriously considering selling this very new camera to get a canon which my inlaws have and I have used. It seemed ...

Pentax is so slow... is this normal..??
The Optio 550 (indeed most of the Pentax range) have one of the best (shortest) shutter lags on the compact digital market. I doubt the Cannon is much better. What can effect this is light. The lag is low in good conditions, but in low light conditions the shutter lag seems to be worse. You ca...

Dduhh
Few days ago, my friend and I had a small talk about photography. He is an amateur photog, just like me, and using a non-pentax autofocus SLR camera. He said he wants to collect some prime lenses but the price issue holds him down. Another thing is that he wants to have a manual focus camera as well...

Filters for B/W
In practical terms I would still use a red filter for most of my monochrome work even with C41 process films. I think the main drawback is that the image is made up of dyes instead of silver and it lacks the absolute "sparkle" that you can get with the silver-rich films such as Plus-X, Tri-X, FP4...

Gossen bisix light meter
Hi John, I used one for a long time until I got the Sixtomat. 1. Turn the center black circle to set the film speed. 2. Make sure the white blind is pulled fully back. 3. Point the meter at the subject and note the reading number at the bottom. 4. Set this against the red triangle and the top...

Advice desperately required... wedding imminent!
Hi guys, got a bit of a problem you may be able to help with. I have been volunteered to do the wedding photographs for my girlfriends daughters wedding. I have done a photography course in the past, about 5 years ago, I have loads of camera equipment- most of it Pentax 35mm but also some twin le...

Phazing film out, digital taking over...
I have read with interest the recent arguments regarding the end of film, rumours of Pentax stopping film camera's and lenses, Kodak stop making 35 film... I am not an expert, far from it, I tend to use a lot of older photography equipment, its cheap, often has great optics and if your patient, ...

close-up focus
I'm using the HELICOID extension with a Spilt-image microprism matte focusing screen and it doesn't work. Any help? Jack swallow

close-up focus
The split image will not work properly with very long lenses and perhaps with macro work as well. Typically it will black out and not be useable. Just focus using the general screen area - there are plain screens provided for those who need this type all the time. It isn't a fault, just an optical f...

close-up focus
Hi, You haven't said which camera you are using. If it's an MX or an LX, you can get a screen which is better for this type of work. I prefer the plain ground glass screen but you can get a split image one for the LX which will not black out in macro work. Regards Kim

Cheap medium format- which one and how?
I second that, the Lubitel can be (and usually is) pretty horrible. Good for experimenting, and for a bit of abstraction, but as for improvements in quality of 35mm it REALLY doesn't do the job. It's along similar lines to the Lomo, which is famed for barely believable distortion, light leaks, foc...

Cheap medium format- which one and how?
Hi John I made a mistake in my post (which I feel you were too polite to correct!) regarding interchangable lenses. I have held a set of interchangable lenses for a TLR (comprising view and object lenses with focus gearing on a bracket/backboard), which I originally assumed were for a Rollei as ...

My Favourite Pentax
I do think that the standards of engineering of some cameras can be absolutely superb - I would puit forward the Voigtlander Bessamatic and the Zeiss Ikon Contarex as prime examples, and of course the Pentax cameras as well. So which Pentax cameras do we think are the pinnacle of pure manufacturi...

My Favourite Pentax
I already voted for the 'K' series, the KX in particular. Sometimes it is hard to quantify why you would put a KX above an MX or Super A, the build quality is wonderful for all of them. With the KX it is just a feeling I get from handling it and using it, part 'throw back' to the Spotmatic but with ...

My Favourite Pentax
Poll-taker – I've used an MX for a dozen years and love the feel and heft and relability, I've also been using an MZ-5n for over a year (a bit slow to adopt these here new-fangled autofocus gizmos…) and love it. It has all I reckon I'll ever need, except that silly 'panoramic' letterbox. If they'd ...

My Favourite Pentax
Oi, I've had plenty of other pentax cameras, thank you, up to and including the istD. The K1000 is certainly five times more reliable than the latter. Mine is twenty-odd years old and only ever needed a repair once, when I dropped it off a mountain. The istD had to go back within six months. W...

My Favourite Pentax
Well I think you're all biassed. :x Unfortunately, so am I. I lusted after a Pentax long before I could afford one, then used the wife's Halina for years. I eventually managed to justify an SLR, and got the MES in 1980. Worked great for many years until I dropped it only a foot onto a...
