If you fancy having a go with black and white, try Ilford HP5. All the Ilford films are excellent but HP5 is probably the most useful for a beginner as it can be used in most lighting conditions and is very tolerant where developing is concerned. You may struggle to find a lab able to handle it, but...

Infra Red?

I didn't know that Ken. I still have my first DSLR, and its an *istDS. So I just need to get a filter? I would love to try IR. David The basic filter will work fine with the *istDS. I use several cheap chinese ones (different sizes & wavelegths) with my K100d. A little variation in your normal fram...

Infra Red?

I'm glad you pointed out the IR focussing shift. I'd always thought it slightly curious that Pentax had it engraved on every lens considering how few shoot IR. For anyone who isn't aware of how to use this, you focus normally and then move the focus ring so that the point that was previosly at t...

Infra Red?

Having seen a few peoples digital infra red shots, I was wondering about the infra red film that Ilford make. Someone here had been experimnenting with it I seem to recall? Might make an interesting project with one of the film cameras. As and when there is time! That might have been me! The f...

Should I go for a film SLR?

I was in a very similar position to you, Andrew, a few months back - just fancied a go with a Pentax film SLR. I thought it would be good to get something which was DSLR-esque if I could (in my research I had become rather taken with the MZ-S, which still fetches a fair ransom as far as I can tell)....

Should I go for a film SLR?

Kris' Guide to Pentax film cameras K series First K-mount cameras. Physically the same size as the M42 Spotmatics. K1000 an absolutely basic no-frills camera much used by students and beloved of the sackcloth and ashes brigade. Manufactured for quite some time. K2 top of the range and pricey....

Should I go for a film SLR?

Film camera? I have too many!! :? For my money, if you want full manual it has to be a MX, for auto focus my favorite is the MZ-6. But there's a lot more to choose from. As mentioned the P30 series are solid little manual bodies that can talk to 'A'series lenses, the SF and Zs are big in c...

Should I go for a film SLR?

I use bulk film and load my own cartridges. Doing it this way means I don't have to shoot in standard lengths when trying out a new (to me) body. In fact I tend to shoot on 2 feet lengths(I don't have any logic for this) and always have a spare film ready. However as DM states, the price of fi...

Should I go for a film SLR?

I think for me the "why" is that over 20 years ago I used my grandads old Zenit with mixed results, and that led me to a Sigma SA300 that eventually gave way to a variety of compacts until last year. As a result I guess I never really learnt to take photographs - just snapshots. My hope is tha...

polariser

The circular ones do allow you to see the effect when rotated. However, beware using a circular one on the DA 55-300 lens as it upsets the optical configuration of this lens and causes shots to be very out of focus. Regards David

polariser

Whenever possible I prefer to use linear polarizers for their more pronounced effect. A linear polarizer will cause erroneous readings on a Pentax LX in manual mode. Chris Well done! I thought I was the only person around here who knew that  Linear PLs work perfectly well on Pentax came...

Pentax MX SLR - lens mount question.

Yes it can...but as John says does it really bother you? Spares or repair MX bodies don't tend to go cheap enough that you'd buy one just for the mount. They are very simple to use, you can find a manual as a free PDF online. Consider looking for an SMC Pentax-M 28mm f3.5 to complete the s...

Pentax MX SLR - lens mount question.

What do you mean by leather holder by the way - is it the ever ready case (back half stays wrapped around camera body, front half unclips to reveal the lens when you want to use it) or a camera bag? If the former then it's quite hard to find, ... In my limited experience, the "ever-ready" cases of t...

MX Focusing Screen - Cleaning Tips

Asahi Photo or Harrow Technical. I wouldn't try to clean a screen or mirror as you'll damage them almost certainly. The foam disintegrates after 30 years or so and this is something common to all makes of camera of that era. The foam you refer to is a mirror shock absorber and it absorbs the shoc...

MX Focusing Screen - Cleaning Tips

Just got my MX & LX back off Harrow Technical, they have done a very good job. Both cameras are just as they were 30 years ago when I first got them:)

MZ-6 vs *ist

I'm looking for a decent AF film body to use in conjunction with my K-7; I've got a fair few manual-focus bodies (ME Super, MX, Super A, P30, plus a dozen off-brand clones from Ricoh, Cosina, Chinon etc), but nothing autofocus, and I've narrowed the options down to an MZ-6 (or possibly a 7 but P-TTL...

MZ-6 vs *ist

There aren't many differences between the two bodies, except for their physical design. The *ist is a smaller body due to the way Pentax have placed the film holder. It's upside down and on the 'wrong' side compared to other 35mm SLR's. As HG stated above, the *ist has the 'crippled' K mount wher...

CLA LX vs MX

I currently own two MX bodies, which I have not gotten around to having serviced (the light seals are sticky, and need changing). I now have a possibility of buying an LX for a good price. But after talking to the main Pentax workshop here in Norway, it seems as if it will be very expensive to do a ...

CLA LX vs MX

Back to the LX: Is it easier to service than the MX? I know that the MX has internal foam seals and foam seals around the mirror box that deterioate in much the samme manner as the light seals between the body and the back part. Ideally one should change all these foam seals in the MX, and that is n...
