autofocus

I have a *ist 35mm with a similar 11 point AF system. The Auto mode is distracting, as you try to keep track of where the camera is focusing -- the flashing red light showing changes in the focus point as you compose a shot. The Center mode is limiting, I think, and doesn't take advantage of t...

There's probably a whole generation of photographers that aren't familiar with manual focus. With the camera set to manual focus, you turn the focusing ring on the lens until you think the subject in the viewfinder looks sharp.... This works just fine if your eyesight is up to it, but I'm not...

autofocus

Thanks for what I hope were your "tongue-in-cheek" explanations. I grew up with the SPII and the ME so at least I knew what manual-focus is. But, you did force me to look at the camera again and guess what? I FOUND the Manual Focus setting and that I could actually manual focus. The istD is my fi...

autofocus

So I guess I'm not the only one that turns off multi-point AF! I find that the lens in that mode is always searching and changing focus points. Just using one point, so you lock the focus and then compose the picture, has always made more sense to me! Fortunately, the *st D has focus confirm...

autofocus

I've just got back into using my MZ-50 again after 2 years away from photography. On a recent holiday, I decided to go to "back to basics" and left my 2 FA lenses behind, taking my two 20 yr old manual focus lenses - a SMC A 24/2.8 and a SMC A 50/1.4. Although I used the camera in manual mode th...

M lens functionality on *ist DS: How much?

If set properly, does the *ist DS handle exposure settings when an M series lens is attached? Or do all settings -- focus and exposure -- have to be handled manually? I don't yet own the camera, but am looking around for a few used primes in advance of purchase. Any advice on this, anyone? jav...

M lens functionality on *ist DS: How much?

Hello ppl, My DS has been playing tricks on me; at first I thought I had done something wrong, but then I could see nothing and the camera kept enjoying my puzzled face... I was shooting quickly with my Pentax-M 50mm F/1.4, but the shutter was not responding most of the times I pressed the sh...

M lens functionality on *ist DS: How much?

The shutter release lock using manual focus lens in autofocus mode occurs with all manual focus lenses (K M or A - and indeed I guess even with screwmount lenses and adaptor). It is a feature of the autofocus film cameras as well. It can be used to acheive a 'semiauto' focus mode. Point camra at sbj...

M lens functionality on *ist DS: How much?

The M lenses work on the *st D exactly as they do on the MX. So if the MX is "fiddly", then I suppose all manual lenses are "fiddly". You can set the camera to release the shutter when the autofocus detects something in focus. This is called "trap focus" shooting. Set the AF point on a spot wh...

M lens functionality on *ist DS: How much?

I agree that this method works, and has its advantages, but the suggested, and quicker, way is to press the green button on the D or some other button on the DS. Personally, I rather like this system. When I want the camera to do all the work, I use an AF lens. When I am in a more actively pho...

M lens functionality on *ist DS: How much?

OK, kids here are the hard results of a controlled test. Firmware version 1.12. Meter operating time set to 30 seconds, in custom functions. Format set to RAW Focus selector set to Manual (it's an M lens, after all) Mode set to Apeture Priority ("Av"). 50mm f/1.4 Pentax-M lens set to ...

Brand new *istDS owner

I am just getting back into photography again after many years away doing other things. I was always a Pentax man and was lured back when I saw the *istDS. I have only been using it for just over a week now but already find it a delight to use. I have only been using the centre weighted metering...

problems with New Sigma Hyperzoom and old SF7

Hello eyeryone, Glad I located this forum as I have just purchased (over the Net) a new 28-200 Sigma Hyperzoom lens for my relatively old Pentax SF7. The mount was right and it fit but it doesn't seem to be working properly. In auto mode upon clicking the shutter button the viewfinder goes blac...

K mount and MZ60

Hello. My ME Super is all worn out. my lenses are all K mount. is there an adaptor that I can use so that they can be used with an MZ60 if I get one. I am temporarily using my Cosina as a back up. Regards John Dowers. 8)

K mount and MZ60

Thanks for the info fellas. I am not an advanced photographer, and I am on a budget, so the MZ60 will be sufficient for me. And it did catch my eye some time ago. I think I shall have the ME super repaired anmd then only use it occasionally. It has a bit of sentimental value to it. Its an electri...

K mount and MZ60

Its an electrical fault. Ie it hasn't got any now. So is probably something that an independant repair place can put right. Or of course pack it off to Pentax themselves. No doubt I'll be back on this site if I have anymore questions. Best Regards John Dowers. Why not just look for a used MX?...

Manual lens with *ist DL

one nice feature that is not documented in the manual is this: snap-in focus feature using mf lenses with body set with af on. set the focus to desired distance and press and hold shutter release, when subject (or camera) moves into focus the shutter will automaticall fire. Battery Grip

Hi Anna, Good question, an aspect of the *ist D I am also curious about. I am using rechargeable batteries in all 8 positions. With the batteries fully charged, I can usually get a full day's shooting done to the limit of the card (1GB). Without the battery grip, the camera batteries do no...

Can the ist D be totally silent??

You can turn off the various beep and bleeping noises, but the mirror slap is a physical sound you can't avoid. There are "blimps" made to make cameras quiet, sort of like a foam padding thet the lens sticks out of. You'll probably need to focus manually, as no camera I know of autofouses silent...

Pentax *IST film

I have looked at a friend's LX and the mechanical linkage is no different to that in the *ist as far as I can see, it appears that only the meteirng doesn't work with M lenses. Otherwise the *ist has 6 electrical contacts. My daughter has an MZ60 and this will not cope with older lenses, so I gu...
