Why was the Pentax stand at Focus 2006 at the NEC so bad?

Hi Kimbo.. I tend to stand out at the best of times, what with the ponytail/glasses combo. :) I walked around in a daze more than self pity to be honest. You should have been looking for a hairy 14st pseudo drunk, taking every opportunity to sit down to eat copious amounts of cheese and toma...

Why was the Pentax stand at Focus 2006 at the NEC so bad?

Now, with this marketing thing. Has anyone got any ideas, even if this turns out to be just an excercise in marketing, it might help someone wanting to sell their work.. The main thing I think is; what separates Pentax from Canon, Nikon etc. Quality of product? They're all well built, ...

Why was the Pentax stand at Focus 2006 at the NEC so bad?

I think that backward compatibility is what keeps long-standing users loyal, but it's much less interesting for potential newcomers who don't have a cupboard full of Pentax lenses, and who think an AF zoom is a much sexier proposition than an MF prime. I think ergonomics, small size, and the avai...

Why was the Pentax stand at Focus 2006 at the NEC so bad?

Hi, Remember this... And if you think that was a bad day for me, we were going to take my car, a nice big comfy Ford Scorpio.. and something made a hell of a noise at the back two miles from home, so I carefully drove it back, and we jumped in Mrs. L's car, I've blown my diff up.. :( No ...

Why was the Pentax stand at Focus 2006 at the NEC so bad?

As a new Pentax user I speak. When I walked into the camera shop and said I was looking for a new camera a DSLR, I was immediately pointed to the more expensive Nikons and Canon. To which I replied I want to see a Pentax *Ist. I had read a lot and seen pictures of the "ist D & DS, which ...

Now, with this marketing thing. Has anyone got any ideas, even if this turns out to be just an excercise in marketing, it might help someone wanting to sell their work.. Quality of product? They're all well built, I assume.. I've never been up close to either. Image quality? All three...

PMA 2006

Just some interesting photos: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/pma2006/Pentax/ And what a pain... the new 10Mp looks like it uses SD-cards, so there goes all my CF cards!! So glad they've kept the twin-wheels and the AF button on the back :D Matt

If only........

It's a great pic, if only you could catch all of the reflexion... but tell me, wide open? How on earth did you focus this manually?!

Posted by Flink on 06/03/2006 - 19:58

If only........

Thanks, Flink, Not catching all of the reflection was the "if only..."! With long lenses, you generally want to shoot with a fairly wide aperture to maintain a high shutter speed, and good long lenses should be pretty sharp even wide-open. Using an M or K lens on a DSLR presents met...

are you using srgb? I'm a bit hazy as to exactly what colo(u)r profiles do. My assumption (please correct me) is that a monitor cannot display colours the way that they will appear on a print, and that the colour profiles adjust the monitors rendering of colour so that it (should) match the prin...

If only........

Thanks for the tips guys, there's enough fettling there to keep me out of trouble for a few hours! I'll try Matts' tips then go back to the RAW files and do some new processing. I may just add them to the gallery for a before and after comparison. 8) Thinking about it afterwards, the clue wa...

Pentax M 28mm f/2.8 version 1

At least lenses can't talk back (at least, not yet). All they can do is gaze at you reproachfully with a one-eyed unblinking stare. My heart goes out to that other great collector, King Saud. He had over a thousand wives. Just think of it, cover your ears, and shiver. G

Just swanning around..

LiamD I like your enthusiasm and willingness to share. You take some wonderfull shots, and like me, you take risks. That willingness face rejection is what seperates leaders from the pack. While I didn't graduate, I was still the guy that showed up at the prom with the prom queen. I wouldn't want t...

skylight/UV filters

I know skylight and UV filters should filter out UV light. What I allways wondered was how much UV is blocked out. Does anyone have a idea on how much of the UV light should be filtered out and how much of the overall light should go through at minimum? (I am just curious what the anwsers are,...

scanning B+W Negs

This isn't really 'Pentax' but I have thousands of negs and slides taken with them... I have access to a Minolta DimageIV film scanner and thought about scanning my back catalogue of mainly Tri-X negs. First results have been very disappointing - OK there is probably a lot to learn but I seem to ...

scanning B+W Negs

Whoops! Round where I live (Reading) there are not Pentax DSLRs to be handled and looked at so I was basing my comment on the Nikon D70 and Canon 350D and 20D that I had a play with in Jessops. If Pentax DSLRs have the same bright viewfinder and split-screen focussing screen as my ME Super I'l...

scanning B+W Negs

You dont really need the split screen since the camera has fantastically accurate auto focus. It does however have interchangeable screens so you could probably have one if you wanted. Your ME Super lenses will work with the new camera but with some limitations and an effective increase in focal len...

scanning B+W Negs

The viewfinder in the *ist-D series is brighter than an ME Super. It has a laser etched focus screen which is a great improvement on the ME Super era. And yes, it's huge compared to the piddly Nikon viewfinders :P Any of the SMC-F or SMC-FA series will give full autofocus. Any of the SMC-A series...

Camera backpacks

Buy a fairly good one - it is worth the relatively modest investment. I have a Tamrac model which is quite comfortable and versatile. The Lowepro ones have a good reputation as well, and come in a wide variety of sizes with various levels of features. Another recomended option is the Crumpler 'Brian...
