My AF540FGZ has just arrived (bought from www.bhphotovideo.com for $338, with shipping came to $380, plus £46 duty = about £236). Popped it on the K10D in PTTL mode, fired a few shots, instant satisfaction. Seems to work fine.
Now I'm wondering, can I put it on a Pentax MX, or is that not advisable?

If I bought a camera and it didn't work as I expected, I'd probably wonder if it was working correctly, and try to make sure I had the latest firmware. I'd seek out a friendly bunch of people on a forum somewhere and ask if anyone knew if one was available. These are all intelligent things to do in 2007.
I don't think the OP was blaming the camera, just doing what is absolutely sensible.

Here's my progress report...
As things stand, I've the flash but no AF lens, so haven't tested whether the AF beam helps AF. I've not had time to test whether the flash exposure is affected by the focus screen. Once Royal Mail refund me, the plan is to get a lens which is AF but has quickshift, so I can correct any focus errors... probably the 70 limited.
- Flashgun - arrived, very nice, works well, underexposes presumably to save highlights, but I can work with that
Chinese focus screen - arrived, not top quality, easy to fit, not 100% perfectly lined up, works well nevertheless
AF problems - decided to try another AF lens, sent 43 limited back to SRS, Royal Mail lost package, waiting for refund!
