I've just won a Pentax-A 50mm f2 for use with my K-x. I was advise a f1.7 but they were going for a bit more than i have to spare just now with that time of year coming fast and i have kids. Just lookig to see if this will be OK for Learing and playing with DoF? I only have the kit 18-50mm DAL just now and it's something like 3.5 down @ 18mm.
I'm not looking to work as a Photographer but more looking for a hobby, i like learning, and enjoy looking at others photo's and would like to take part.

Thanks for your comment Lee. I'll keep and eye open on ebay for a great deal like yours. I'm happy with the quality i see it's more the subject and my own skills that need help. I'm just starting out so i've not got the right eye for a photo opp yet, but i'm sure with time and reading some of the tips on here i'll get there.

Thanks Stuart, i've had some good traffic trails with it. I posted on here tonight. I like the DoF idea of the 50mm 1.7. I'm sure when i get time and pratice things will fall in to place.

Thanks for your tips. I'll need to keep any eye open for a 50mm 1.7 not too sure what to look for but would like to own one. I have 3 young kids so my weekend are spent with them and my Wife but with the 50mm i could take some great shots of my Family.
I have tried playing a little with DoF but my kit lens is prob not the best for that.
My Wife's friend has also just started a college doing a Photography course so i'll pester her for tips.

Wanted a SLR before digital but never had the money, and now i do so got myself a Pentax K-x after reading many reviews. Nice bit of kit just need to learn how to make the magic happen. Hoping i can pick up some tips in here.

Yep, absolutely.
The f2 version of the 50mm is under-rated IMO, you do need to stop down a bit to get the best results but this goes for all lenses. If you ever decide it doesn't meet your needs then you should be able to sell for about the same as you paid for it.
Make sure you set the lens aperture ring to "A" (press the button to turn it past f22) and the camera to manual focus, you will also need to select 50mm from the menu which appears when the camera is turned on for SR to work properly. The camera will remember the last focal length used, so after doing it once you just need to press OK to confirm when the menu appears.
