You don't say what you are photographing. Is it static or moving subjects? I'd suspect the Pentax SR isn't as good for moving subjects. Peter refers to the Sigma 150-500, well that lens has 2 settings built in. One for static and one for panning. The Penax bodies don't have this.
SR or any image stabilisation system is no good at all for moving subjects, fast shutter speed is the solution to that problem.

I think we should have a Pentax Q outing thread where everyone that likes the look of it comes out of the closet and admits to their secret.
Agreed, go ahead Mike start it up! Hello my name is Vasilis and I love the look of the Q

With a K5 armed with a GPS unit, it'll even track the stars for up to 300 seconds. That's got to mean that, if the stabilisation is digital, it uses very fine stepping increments. I think however it probably uses an analogue sensor positioning system, which is stepless.
For some reason I am strangely drawn to the GPS unit ....

But then I rather like the look of the Pentax Q as well so what do I know.
I don't like the look of the Q, I love the look of the Q it is like when the PEN came out and everybody thought what a cool retro/modern styling just better. I have to see reviews to see how the sensor performs but if it is any good whatsoever one of those will replace my lx3

The Nikon 70-300 VR is well know to be an excellent lens, I had it for a few months a year ago or so and it is an amazing lens on a crop camera with excellent VR - Nikon's VR II system btw is very effective.

As John said the Tamron is not optically up there and also I thought the K-x SR is not as advanced as neither the newer K-r/K5 implementation nor the VR II on the 70-300. I do remember reading that even the K20D SR was not that great.

So maybe a better lens on your Pentax is the answer as well as a brand new K-5?

As above, it works for me, when I was trying the 50-135 in SRS against my D7k/50-150 the pictures were much clearer on the Pentax combo.

What lens are you using? wider lenses are not getting stabilised as well, then again you shouldn't need them to be.

I was going to sell mine as well, bought the kit of K-5. But given that it is a WR lens and they do not seem to fetch more than 60£ I thought I might as well keep it.

Didn't see the point on selling it for 60£ when it is a decent versatile lens really.

This is a question very much open to interpretation... sharpest wide open? sharpest on the tele end sharpest on the wide end?

I think the best zoom lens I have used is the 50-150 Sigma followed by the 17-50 Tamron. Both benefit from stopping down from 2.8 to about 3.5/4 both are not at their best at the very extremes.

Never used a 70-200, find them extremely big and bulky though I was very tempted by the 70-200 Tamron mentioned above. Heard the 50-135 Tokina is absolutely great as is its Pentax equivalent

Couple with the 50-150, I will be happy if the 50-135 is just as good

This is the other thing I was thinking about, if I have the 40mm on the camera I am not likely to carry the 50-135 with me... if I have the 40mm on the camera though I will definitely carry the 70mm with me. Why can we not have a 10-150 pancake f/2 for like 1k or something ?

Correct me if I am wrong but the 11-16 is not available in Pentax mount and the Tokina 12-24 is the Pentax 12-24.

There is the 8-16 at 375 (still?) from SRS if you can push it a bit and there was the 10-20 Sigma from Cameraworld for 298 until recently, not sure they still have stocks.

Sorry just a bit late John got there before me

As I said I am buying both but just was not sure which to go for first... just seems like the 50-135 is in short supply
