Built in shake reduction. Does this really works?

Yes, it does work. Just allow time for the hand symbol in the viewfinder to stabilise.
What lens are you using on your Pentax?

As above, it works for me, when I was trying the 50-135 in SRS against my D7k/50-150 the pictures were much clearer on the Pentax combo.
What lens are you using? wider lenses are not getting stabilised as well, then again you shouldn't need them to be.

Do not use shake reduction if using a tripod, monopod or resting on say a wall.
As John says make sure the hand symbol is showing steady (as on and ready). Not usually an issue.
Use the camera in shutter priority mode and balance highest shutter speed possible with an acceptable ISO. Remember though that too wide an aperture against high shutter speed will reduce depth of field already shallow at telephoto. I've seen spoilt photos considered shake that are simply out of focus and vice versa.
Squeeze the shutter gently while breathing out. I was taught that 40 years ago and it still holds good, especially as we all get older.
Finally be relaxed as possible, take your time and enjoy.

I've compared images using my K20D and K5 with my Sigma 150-500mm OS lens at 500mm and can see no difference whether using the lens OS, camera SR, or both (oddly).
I can see a significant difference when no stabilisation is used.
My opinion, yes it does work, and very well.
With a K5 armed with a GPS unit, it'll even track the stars for up to 300 seconds. That's got to mean that, if the stabilisation is digital, it uses very fine stepping increments. I think however it probably uses an analogue sensor positioning system, which is stepless.
As John has stated, you must wait for the hand symbol to appear in the viewfinder, which indicates that the SR system is stabilised. Just as you have to with any in-lens stabilisation system.

Thanks for the replies.
I have the k-x, i dont have much problem when using the kit lenses
but its only when using the tamron 70-300 mm ..
I shoot either in manual mode or aperture priority with this lens and no other mode work

Probably the Nikon VR lens is just a better lens than the Tamron one.
The SMC Pentax-DA 55-300mm lens would seem the probable best choice for you.

The Nikon 70-300 VR is well know to be an excellent lens, I had it for a few months a year ago or so and it is an amazing lens on a crop camera with excellent VR - Nikon's VR II system btw is very effective.
As John said the Tamron is not optically up there and also I thought the K-x SR is not as advanced as neither the newer K-r/K5 implementation nor the VR II on the 70-300. I do remember reading that even the K20D SR was not that great.
So maybe a better lens on your Pentax is the answer as well as a brand new K-5?

For some reason I am strangely drawn to the GPS unit ....With a K5 armed with a GPS unit, it'll even track the stars for up to 300 seconds. But then I rather like the look of the Pentax Q as well so what do I know.

I don't like the look of the Q, I love the look of the Q it is like when the PEN came out and everybody thought what a cool retro/modern styling just better. I have to see reviews to see how the sensor performs but if it is any good whatsoever one of those will replace my lx3

Agreed, go ahead Mike start it up! Hello my name is Vasilis and I love the look of the Q

You don't say what you are photographing. Is it static or moving subjects? I'd suspect the Pentax SR isn't as good for moving subjects. Peter refers to the Sigma 150-500, well that lens has 2 settings built in. One for static and one for panning. The Penax bodies don't have this.

SR or any image stabilisation system is no good at all for moving subjects, fast shutter speed is the solution to that problem.
