I agree about Photobox, I've used them a couple of times for calendars which were OK but the free prints I was offered were not up to Jessops or Boots standard - in fact slightly bright and over-saturated.

I have used BPD Photech for some 12 x 18" prints and they are well above High Street quality, seem to show detail well and the colour balance is good (though after my first set I lightened darker areas to bring them out in the print).

Not overexpensive either if I remember.

Ditto. I use a Gorillapod SLR zoom with a K20 and 16-45, & put my normal tripod head on it. Good for wrapping around railings, seat backs etc. where a normal tripod wouldn't work.

Interesting discussion. I'm an enthusiast rather than a pro, and I would say 90% of my shots (including all those I have framed, the few I've been paid for and most of those I've used in publications or talks) are taken on 'walkabout' (including car touring and from the deck of a boat) rather than specific shoots. I might for instance spend a day or two strolling around a city or a day or afternoon on a country or coastal walk, and would normally take my K20 with a suitable lens or occasionally two. I want to get the best images I can without being overburdened with kit; I have noticed enough difference between the 18-55 and my two main zooms to make the extra size and weight worth it (minimal anyway for the 24-90), and I'm starting to think I would take a long zoom out more often if I had something better than my Sigma 70-300 (and maybe a K5 with better high-ISO performance, but that will have to wait!).

Having said that I'm about to depart for London for a business meeting, brewery tour and theatre trip - I'll take my LX3 .

I have two main walkabout lenses, a DA 16-45 and an FA 24-90. Both have looseish barrels when extended but they're fine optically and mechanically. On a walk I take the one that makes most sense for the type of country, so the 16-45 wins easily for cities and usually for mountains, 24-90 for coast and rolling uplands.

Starting from scratch I like John's list; my reservation is a suspicion that I might notice a drop in IQ from the two lenses above to the 18-135. Having said that the build quality of both the 18-135 and 17-70 (Pentax) look better than either of mine. No experience with Sigma, I'm afraid.

Occasionally I go out with just a Pentax-M 28mm 3.5 or recently-acquired Pentax-A 24mm 2.8. Can recommend both; I think the 28mm produces slightly sharper images but I'm not so keen on the 'green button' metering necessary with the manual lens.

It's called a 'watch roll' - was in a men's accessories display, comes with some padded cubes for strapping wristwatches on to. http://www.johnlewis.com/174374/Style.aspx

The dividers aren't adjustable, unfortunately - the 24mm on the right is a snug fit.

I wondered about fungus, but used to have some little leather lens cases for my Praktica lenses years ago and they came to no harm. I suppose it depends where the leather is kept. Maybe I should put the lenses in plastic bags first (??)

Spotted this in John Lewis and couldn't resist, even at £25:

It does say 'in the Japanese market.' Still listed as current in the UK.

At the moment I have negatives, slides, most of the prints, and scans (on computer, removable HDD and DVD) of the more worthwhile ones... if space is at a premium at a later date I can always bin most of the prints/negatives and keep only those that I'm likely to want to print from.
