Walkaround Prime?

Looking for a little lens advice, is there such as thing as a walkaround prime? I mean a prime lens that is an ideal focal length to allow you to use it as a walkaround rather than a more conventional "walkaround lens" like a 17-50, 17-70, etc?

I use a DA40 for town visits.

It's so small that, when on my K110d, the whole thing fits in a pocket but produces shots like this!

Your 35mm f2.4 should be ideal.

Agreed, use your 35mm. It's roughly equivalent in field of view to the old 50mm standard lens on film, very sharp, compact, and weighs next to nothing.

Before I had that I used a Pentax-M 28mm f3.5 then an SMC Pentax 28mm f3.5. Still got both, but they're now stuffed in a pocket when I take a film camera out just in case I need a wider angle.

And number 3 for your DA35/2.4

Just try it. If it does not do the trick, get the FA31Ltd. It works for me as my only lens on the K5

Yep again for the 43mm Ltd. Pretty much been stuck on my DSLR for the past four years.

The 'standard' 50mm on 35mm was considered to be a walk around prime. An APS-C DSLR would need a 33.3333mm lens to have an equivalent field of view.

Since nobody makes a 33.3333mm lens, the 31mm Ltd or any 35mm lenses are closest.

35mm 2.4, no brainer, given your previous experience and your penchant for buying kit I'm surprised you feel the need to ask TBH.

Another vote for the 35mm F2.4

If 35mm is the focal length to go with, then how about the DA 35mm 2.8 limited macro? Then you'd have macro capability as well for your walkabout.

To be boring I would also say use your 35 - at least for a while.

I bought a FA 35/2 a few years ago for DOF stuff and indoors but now it's the lens that is attached to the body by default whenever we go out. It really only comes off if we need to go telephoto.

Only time I would look beyond that is if you 'walkaround' the countryside a lot and need something wider for landscapes.

I use my 35mm ltd macro as my walkabout, same focal length as your 35 2.4.

It's worth considering the DA 21mm. Small, light and with a nice field of view with no distortion.

I spent a week in the Aviemore area 18 months ago with the K10d and DA 21 (it was the only AF lens I had at the time). Photographed everything from landscapes to the Strathspey Steam Railway to the annual Harley Davidson fest. An excellent lens for general use IMHO.

The DA21mm is lovely. Alternatively the Sigma 24mm SuperwideII is one to look out for if manual focus isn't a problem but money is. Sharp sharp sharp, and close focussing too.

I had the 40mm Ltd for a while [ it now has a new home ] but really found it was too small for my hands - the 35mm is physically a bit bigger - I can 'feel ' it and I suspect it will be on the K-x most of the time
