I must admit that having given it some thought I prefer the idea of a metal hood - I look at them as a form of lens protection (prefer not to use UV filters etc)

The rubbber ones look a very good cheap option though

Just to follow this up after a bit of research I bought a metal Takumar 135-150mm (49mm thread) lens hood off ebay for £10 and it works perfectly

I've just bought a used copy of the FA 50mm 1.4 so will be putting it to good use soon, I'm spending a week in Snowdonia shortly.

I've tended in the past to go for the "sweeping" landscape shots so it should prove an interesting process trying out the 50mm, a few panos are on my list too which should be ideal with the virtually non-existant distortion of this lens

Sorry for delay in replying....

It fails to focus very occasionally, mainly at the long end, and makes an uncharacteristic noise, as I say it's quite rare so I haven't given it much thought

I'm a fan of the Pentax colour...I swapped my Sigma 17-70 for the Pentax DA 17-70 purely for this reason

I have the DA 17-70 & must admit that very occasionally it seems to behave a little oddly, nothing serious and so far at least it's not affected the results...hopefully it's not a sign of things to come though !!

Interesting stuff...just realised too Mike that you've just bought my A series 50mm F2 off Ebay - it's on its way to you tomorrow

I'd recommend either the Sigma 17-70 or the Pentax 17-70 having owned both, the Pentax bettering the Sigma for colour/contrast whilst been pretty much the same regarding sharpness. I haven't owned the WR version of the kit lens so can't comment on that one in particular, I do find the Pentax/Sigma 17-70 a significant improvement over the 18-55 I owned some time ago though.

Terrific shot, the hill contours caught my eye as much as the sea spray

Well, I opted to try photobox as they have a good range of size options for the 3:2 format, but I'm less than impressed with their resizing algorithms especially with their slideshow option, quite shocking in fact.

The proof will be in the prints of course.
I've used Photobox for prints from time to time, normally for orders sent direct to customers, never had any complaints and had quite a bit of positive feedback from customers - never tried the gallery though
