Right, but that is due to an act of unconditional love from Apple to its punters. It is however not agape, since Apple have done nothing wrong--everybody has the problem, according to Jobs.

So no apology, no actual fix, and no surprises whatsoever.

Nothing goes on indefinitely.

Let’s see what the Apple press conference just getting under way brings.

But first, in more shock news Whoopi Goldberg has “murdered” her iPhone 4.

Quote:
"The people couldn't get a hold of me...my phone would ring and ring and ring to them, but wouldn't do anything to me," she explains, adding that she also had trouble with e-mail. "My phone was bad; it wasn't just that the antenna was bad, it was bad," she said.

Perhaps rather than ask that question you could have done me the courtesy of actually reading some of the foregoing before apparently dismissing it out of hand as “nonsense, bigotry and conjecture”, but since you do so nicely I’ll give you a quick summary.

Prior to the recent further clarification on the iPhone 4 reception flaw I had nothing really to say against the handset itself. It is techno gadget with features closely comparable to those available from others at a similar price point; some are perhaps better, others worse. That is the nature of most product segments.

I have little to no interest in most of these as I’m sure is the case for at least 90% of customers, who merely want a device they can make and receive calls and SMS on, take the odd snapshot, and perhaps check Facebook from time to time. However, on a strictly rational basis the reception flaw would seem to make the iPhone 4’s fitness for that purpose severely in doubt. And FYI while many have not experienced the problem, many, many others most certainly have, and it apparently particularly manifests with data connections; have you tired that?

My attack on Apple and Jobs is instead largely ethical and moral. Some will agree with this and others will not, but I see no reason why I should not make my case.

Furthermore, I am sure you will be delighted to hear I have quite a bit of ammo left on that front. And since you are interested in therapy I can tell you that one particular avenue involves applying my preferred Jungian school of psycho-analysis to the subset of aggressive, foulmouthed bullyboys, amongst the hardcore fanboy base.

However, whereas some interpret criticism of a company that happens to make a product they own as a personal insult – itself a highly interesting avenue for analysis wouldn’t you say? – this rather involves a degree of personal attack through analysis to be extrapolated into a wider generalisation; that one will be kept in reserve as I’m still trying to play cricket here.

Except for on the reception flaw debacle of course; in my view it’s just not serious to treat that as anything other than a joke.

The real news: The Apple PR machine attenuates

. . .Even when I’ve personally disagreed with an Apple advertising approach (the mean-spiritedness and, frankly, mis-leading nature of the “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” campaign) I’ve still recognized their effectiveness and the way in which Apple’s advertising runs circles around its competitors.

So, there: I’ve disclosed that I love Apple products and admire its advertising, marketing and retail brilliance.

What confuses people is how I can do all that, but still enjoy seeing Apple get clobbered for something that probably is not nearly the big deal it is being portrayed as.

Well, here’s the deal: I hate Apple’s approach to Public Relations. Call it media relations, promotions, corporate communications, whatever. Apple’s philosophy is to leverage all of its power (and it has lots) to maintain maximum control through any means possible, over anything that is written or reported about the company, its products or Steve Jobs. When it comes to PR, Apple practices mid-20th century propaganda techniques — with nothing that even hints of transparency and openness that has proven to be effective for most companies who have adopted 21st century approaches.

. . .Apple’s approach to PR is straight from the Leni Riefenstahl playbook. It is conceived, scripted and and executed with precision. And, in the same way even those who disdain the role of her work in propagandizing Hitler still heap praise on the “artistry” and “brilliance” of Riefenstahl’s filmmaking, Apple’s success at “managing” media relations is constantly touted by “experts” while most of us know deep in our gut there’s something wrong with how Apple believes intimidation, secrecy, lawsuits and theatrics will always trump transparency and conversation.

Apple's brewing shitstorm

. . Rex Hammock, who I admire as a friend and as a pundit, wrote a piece about Apple and the crazy situation with the iPhone 4. He's right, but he doesn't quite go far enough in his analysis.

I don't think the problem is with the iPhone 4. I think what we're seeing is Apple's charm wearing off. The Reality Distortion Field bubble is about to burst. Their run as the Exceptional Company is about to end. And they're going to be the last ones to figure it out. And it's going to be the ugliest shitstorm you've ever seen.

Why will it be so ugly? Because Apple's hype has been steadily inflating since 1997 when Steve Jobs returned, and it's never taken a dip. They've risen from being written off to being worth more than Microsoft.

. . It will be ugly because Apple is going to let it get ugly. Because unlike the oil companies they have no experience with PR disasters. When I read their first public response on July 2, the one that said the problem was the meter measuring the strength of AT&T's signal, I couldn't believe this was meant to be taken seriously. It's the kind of story The Onion might have written on a bad day. Or Jon Stewart. That a corporate PR team wrote this says how unseasoned their people are. That they thought this answer was going to satisfy anyone says how out of touch they are with the world they are in.

Apple has no concept of what's it like to be disbelieved, untrusted, seen as an American corporation and nothing more.

. .Apple is a company that desperately needs to grow up and wipe the smile off its face, and roll its sleeves up and start to appreciate that they're no longer the upstart, the underdog, the Crazy One in the Richard Dreyfus ad. They are The Man, the Boss, the one who, from now on, everyone is going to be taking shots at and shits on.

I use Macs. I'm typing this on a new 27-inch iMac. I stood in line to buy the iPhone, in the sweltering summer New York heat. I was pleased when Apple people came out to bring us bottled water. More of that Apple. More care and concern for the people who give you not only their respect and adoration, but also their money. The rules that apply to The Rest Of Us are about to apply to you. Time to get ready for it.

BTW, I am an Apple shareholder.

US Senator Jumps Into IPhone Antenna Fray, Urges Free Fix
Last update: 7/15/2010 2:27:03 PM

By Scott Morrison
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)--The mounting controversy over the antenna design in Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPhone 4 has hit a receptive ear in Washington, as a prominent U.S. Senator on Thursday urged the company to come up with a "permanent fix" to the problem at no cost to customers.

In a letter to Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs, Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D., N.Y.) asked the Cupertino, Calif. company to provide customers with a clearly written explanation of the cause of the iPhone 4's reception problem and "make a public commitment to remedy it free of charge."

While Apple has largely downplayed the matter, Schumer's letter suggests that Apple's public-relations crisis could continue to grow until the hardware maker comes up reasonable solution.

Apple has been plagued with user complaints about dropped calls when the phone is held in a way that covers part of the antenna, which is built into a stainless steel band around the phone's frame. Antenna-design experts have said the design makes the iPhone 4 more susceptible to reception issues.

Schumer said the solutions offered so far by Apple for dealing with the so-called "death grip" malfunction-such as holding the device differently, or buying a cover for it-seem to be insufficient because they unfairly place the burden on consumers for resolving the problem.

Apple has scheduled a news conference for Friday concerning its iPhone 4, prompting company watchers to speculate that it will offer a solution. An Apple spokesman declined to provide further details. Schumer's letter noted that earlier this week Consumer Reports magazine said it wouldn't recommend the iPhone 4 and suggested it had a hardware defect.

A recall of the device is unlikely, because the problem doesn't affect safety and only occurs for some users in certain situations. But financial analysts said Apple could give away its $29 rubber "bumper" case, which they said would solve the antenna reception problem. Analysts estimate that such action would cost Apple $1 to $5 a phone.

Yup, my whole body is actually twisted with rage and hatred.

In fact the issue here that is you are projecting your own degree of emotional engagement onto me.

I am merely an interested observer as a short seller of Apple stock. And I have no emotional issues with that whatsover for now .

It will be very interesting to see what comes out of the scheduled press conference for tomorrow. One thing is certain though; bad news is invariably released on a Friday to minimise the impact on the ‘news cycle’.

Apple Engineer Told Jobs IPhone Antenna Might Cut Calls

Apple Inc.’s senior antenna expert voiced concern to Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs in the early design phase of the iPhone 4 that the antenna design could lead to dropped calls, a person familiar with the matter said.

Last year, Ruben Caballero, a senior engineer and antenna expert, informed Apple’s management the device’s design may cause reception problems, said the person, who is not authorized to speak on Apple’s behalf and asked not to be identified. A carrier partner also raised concerns about the antenna before the device’s June 24 release, according to another person familiar with the situation.

Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Apple, declined to comment and said he wouldn’t make Caballero available for an interview. Caballero didn’t respond to a call and an e-mail seeking comment. Apple plans to hold a press conference tomorrow about the device. Dowling declined to elaborate on what will be discussed.
