This could be helpful for adjusting brightness and contrast if you don't want to calibrate your monitor. When you can see three circles you're all set.

on my screen it looks greyish and grainy as well.

It's Pu'u O'o on Big Island, Hawaii as seen from a helicopter.
Taken in January 2004 with the *istD and the Kiron 70-210 mm at ISO 400, 1/350 s, A 11.0.
