Hi, I'm thinking of heading up to Northern Sweden this winter to attempt to photograph the aurora. So I'll be standing outside with the camera (K5) on a tripod for what could be hours between 9PM and 2AM. Temps can routinely hit -20 at night and may go down to -30, especially as I may be up a mountain! Anybody any actual experience of trying this and any helpful hints? I've found a few threads about general arctic photography (they were useful) but I think aurora photography could be pretty tough on the camera. On the other hand there is plenty of evidence to suggest it's possible!
I'll also take my Haig mount to do some guided astrophotography which will be similarly challenging for the k5.
Thanks guys

For those who missed it first time round, BBC4 repeats tomorrow (Sunday) at 22:10, the dramatised account of the David Bailey / Jean Shrimpton photoshoot in Manhattan in 1962.

Bailey was using Pentax gear at the time, the whole programme is very interesting and entertaining, and Bailey's solution to Vogue's demands that he shoot in medium format is hilarious!

Enjoy

Closest match I can find on 'tother forums lens reviews is this -

Not sure if this is the correct one - no personal experience of it.

I found it quite difficult to get used to the new develop module. It is not just an evolution, more of a re-think! It is better, but you need to look at one or two of the various tutorials emerging on the web to understand how to use it to its best advantage. Michael Frye has just issued a vid on his blog (which I've not yet viewed, but normally like his stuff) or this thread is excellent, but the length of it should give some clue as to the complexity that awaits -

It relates to the beta but the advice holds good for the official release.

Both have their place. I love my primes for landscape and general work. But for my climbing photography I'm often hanging from a rope at considerable height working with a subject who's moving fast - zooms are essential. Horses for courses. My primes beat my zooms hands down for optical quality.

Hi guys.

Been using LR4 with my K5 DNG raw images for a week or two now. TBH I'm not sure I like (or possibly am not yet used to) the new develop module / process engine. I tend to process mostly sunlit / highish contrast landscapes, and I'd got very used to PV2010 (which I thought was a major advance over PV2003). 2010 has fewer sliders, and offers coarser control than 2012, but somehow the effect seemed more "holistic".

Created virtual copies of a couple of images and processed 1 copy in 2010 and 1 in 2012. Prefer the 2010 engine "look".

The new PV2012 engine has an overall exposure slider and then 4 sliders for shadows / highlights / whites / blacks. Somehow doesn't feel right - not yet convinced by PV2012 - I probably just need to persevere.

Any other thoughts? Anyone found any LR4 develop module tutorials for Landscapes?

Cheers

I've never had this problem, but this seems a useful approach to keep on file just in case -

I had an ME Super with this problem back 3-4 years ago. Sent it to Pentax who said it couldn't be repaired. Don't think it was Johnsons then, so maybe you will have more luck with them. Hope so, lovely camera, I still miss it!

I've read the writeup on DPReview and it does sound interesting, some tasty enhancements to the develop module. If any brave Pentax owner has tried it, I would be very interested to know what you thought, and whether you noticed any improvements (or problems).
Cheers
